It's official... This Independence Day we broke a record!
As heatwaves sizzled around the world,?July 4 Was Earth’s Hottest Day In Over 100,000 Years—Breaking Record For 2nd Day In A Row!
In the United States,?57 million people were exposed to dangerous heat on Tuesday.?At the same time, China was gripped by a sizzling heat wave, Canada's wildfires continue to burn choking millions with smoke, the Antarctic is hotter than usual, and Argentina is experiencing one of their warmest winters.
While we celebrated our 247th year of Independence, we must acknowledge that it is our very own energy independence from?choking planet polluting fuels?that will get us out of this crisis.
Fortunately, while the world is literally on fire, we are making significant strides to decarbonize our energy system!
China was the biggest contributor, adding 141 GW to the continent’s new capacity vs. 29.1 GW from North America?(something to keep in mind when skeptics and politicians blame China for our climate woes).
Additionally, thanks to climate investments from the Biden-Harris administration, the US clean energy workforce grew 3.9%, outpacing overall U.S. employment and electric vehicles increased +27% from 2021 to 2022 accounting for 59% of all net new jobs in motor vehicles.??
That is great news! But, annual additions of renewable power capacity?must grow three times the current level by 2030,?if we want to stay on a pathway to limit global warming to safe levels. (See image below)
Sadly, the fossil fuel industry, and its enablers in Congress, state legislatures, and around the world, continue to inject misinformation and/or block progress. Just last week in Florida, Governor DeSantis vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have scaled the growing EV sector in our state?(see CLEO's statement here).?He also rejected federal funds ($346Million) for energy efficiency initiatives, dollars that could have stimulated our state’s economy. These unreasonable acts are a detriment to Floridians and must stop! Energy efficiency is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to combat rising temperatures, reduce energy costs for Floridians, and improve the competitiveness of Florida’s businesses.
The CLEO Institute remains dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of clean energy solutions and will?call out these senseless actions.?
But we need YOU to power us!
Together, we can work towards a future where Florida, the Sunshine State, thrives economically, achieves energy independence with the power of the sun, and protects our environment for generations to come.
Will you help us?
With stubborn optimism,
Yoca and all at the CLEO Institute!
TAMPA UNVEILS CLIMATE ACTION & EQUITY PLAN
After two years of collaboration between The CLEO Institute and the City of Tampa, the city launched its first ever Climate Action and Equity Plan.
This marks a significant milestone for the city, as it becomes the latest local government in Florida to lead the way toward a renewable energy transition and enhanced resilience against the impacts of the climate crisis with an equitable and people-centered approach.?The plan outlines 143 initiatives spanning ten categories: energy, water and wastewater, stormwater, transportation and land use, waste management, housing and development, community, habitat and environment, food, and governance. It's a comprehensive approach to ensure Tampa's sustainable and thriving future.?And because climate change can exacerbate social, racial, and economic inequalities, this plan ensures the most vulnerable residents are at the center of it! CLEO INSTITUTE TESTIFIES DURING EPA HEARING ON AN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ISSUE
On Wednesday, June 28th, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials were met with photos, data, and devastating stories of deceased loved ones at a national hearing in Chicago regarding the agency’s proposed new rules regulating coal ash.?
Florida has 28 coal ash dumpsites and Laura Betts, Program Manager in Orlando, spoke about the impacts of climate change and the lack of safeguards to protect communities against pollution and contamination generated by active and inactive plants, especially when facing the intensification of hurricanes and chronic flooding. Across the country, power plant owners have avoided cleaning up coal ash, and 91% of them are currently polluting groundwater above federal health standards with toxic pollutants. Coal ash contains mercury, cadmium, and arsenic! The EPA must finalize these new, important protections, even if industry opposes them.
The EPA will hold an online public hearing about this on July 12, 2023. Join us and voice your concerns!
