It’s Official

Happy Fall and belated Thanksgiving Greetings! One of the things I learned when I moved to Canada is that Thanksgiving in October?not Labour Day at the beginning of September or even the solstice on September 21st?is actually the last day of summer. We Canadians have to prolong the season, which starts on the 2-4 weekend in May and wraps up in early to mid-October because we know on either side of those marker dates, we’re likely to run into late or early snow!

As we shutter the cottage, pack away our swimsuits and dig out the cozy sweaters, it’s good to remember the joys of indoors after a short, hedonistic summer. Many people who have given no thought to their careers for months suddenly find themselves thinking about dusting off their resume, updating their LinkedIn profile and poking around to see what’s out there.

The good news is that this is one time of year when employers are doing much the same. The steady as you go/overlapping vacation days of summer are over and it’s time to get back to business. Since most organizations use December as the end of their fiscal year, Q4 is also budget season. Evaluating needs and goals for the coming year often results in a flurry of hiring between now and New Year’s.
