It’s None of My Business What Other People Think of Me

It’s so hard to rise above negative voices and feedback. About 5 years ago, I was doing some personal growth work and I read the words, “It’s none of my business what other people think of me.” Now, in theory, that’s an easy idea to get my brain around. However, in practice it sure can be difficult.
Of course, I worry about getting approval from others. At times, I measure what I say, what I do, and how I act. But at least I’m more aware that I’m doing it now. I’d say I’ve made progress over the years, but I still have a ways to go. It’s not about what others think of me that’s important. It’s what I think of me that truly matters.
How people perceive me reveals more about them than it does about me. People create perceptions based on their own conditioning and filters. So, while difficult, I try not to take it personally.
People inherently hold back from being fully themselves or stepping out and living their purpose in a big way because of the fear of being judged by what people will think or say.
I used to want everyone to like me. Now I know that if everyone likes me, I’m doing something wrong. When you live your truth and follow your heart, you’re bound to make waves. As a strong personality, I’m not usually constrained by what I think I’m “supposed” to be doing. Rather, I focus on where I’m going, how I’m going to get there, and who I can lift up along the way. Leaders are meant to challenge the process – it’s the only way to create viable change.
My life and my business has been about creating meaningful relationships with others. It’s not about falling in line with what others want me to say or do.
So, for me, I’ve learned that I need to keep sauntering down my own path. When I do that, when I stay true to my values, I stand out. I also upset some people, but – and most importantly – I create change. People have the right to think whatever they want about me. But it doesn’t change who I am.
