It’s a new year, do you feel confident about your job search?
Cayla Dengate
Senior Editor and RAP Champion at LinkedIn. I’m also studying Disaster and Emergency Management.
There are few things more exciting than being told ‘you got the job’.
Personally, I remember being literally speechless when I was offered this job at LinkedIn. I thought I’d blown the final interview, so to be told they chose me was dizzying and thrilling.
Confidence and job seeking don’t always go hand in hand. After all, looking for a new role can bring with it waves of emotion — from hope to disappointment, rejection to selection and a fair amount of nerves.
So LinkedIn has been tracking job seeker confidence throughout the pandemic. LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence Index rates job seekers on a scale of -100 to +100, and it began at the start of the pandemic with a score of -6. This latest round showed job seekers ended the year the most confident they’ve been since the pandemic began with a score of +23.
The two top factors driving that confidence are an availability of jobs and the chance of income increasing.
As the Great Reshuffle movement sweeps the nation, many are looking to change not just jobs, but entire industries. Of those open to a new role, the study found nearly 6 in 10 are considering, have actively started or have already changed industries.
So, why the change? Nearly half (46%) said they wanted to move into an industry that better aligned with their interests or values — with those in corporate services, finance and manufacturing the most likely to want to make the move. Job seekers rated a job that aligns with their personal values more highly than pay.
Of the sectors measured, the top industries where employees are considering a switch, have actively started looking to move, or have already changed industries are corporate services, finance, manufacturing as well as those affected by the pandemic like recreation and travel, healthcare and public administration.
So let’s look at our own personal confidence scale. What’s been your career high point and low point since the pandemic began?

Personally, my low point was juggling kids at home and returning to work from maternity leave at the start of the pandemic, and my high point, honestly, is right now. I'm excited to be coming into a new year and getting ready to put on Jobs Bootcamp — a week of live shows tailored to job seekers, starting on January 17. We'll have a special edition coming soon with more information.
Your turn — what’s been your career high point and low point since the pandemic began? Share your thoughts in the comments.

2 年Its a great turn around I think that is about to happen Cayla Dengate and I'm all for the power shift. My low point was leaving the corporate world to start my own business and while I was setting that up I did some consulting work. The Director set off my ptsd 3 times before I finally said enough and walked. That also happens to be my highlight as it triggered me setting up my own social enterprise www.love-istheanswer.org to do what I can to change the world for our children. One of my big passions is to make psychological safety common in every workplace and even better I've found the best Partner that does this in an amazing way that is going to blow CEOs minds. I can't wait to get it out there in 2022.

2 年Careers and job searches are bound to include highs and lows, Cayla. I love how you stress that all of us succeed and fail, which typically comes with relevant emotions. For me, my high is starting a business in a line of work that I enjoy and allows me to help others. I don't have a specific major low in mind, but entrepreneurship has small disappointments every day :). Accepting both highs and lows and being grateful may be the best way to manage these situations and emotions - we will all face both of them anyways.

2 年High point is undertaking post grad studies within an emerging field (cyber security) with a great institution. Low point is the number of applications that have been submitted that have not received a response, which contrary to the research - confidence is greatly reduced.

2 年I can’t say I had too much of a low that wasn’t normal for what I did. I’d say working for a company previously in aged care not having an ATS and having 60-70 positions to fill and not being heard due to how crazy we were and not being heard prior to the pandemic to having one and then the pandemic proving why we should have invested. My career high was starting my role in talent at Commtract and then being promoted to commercial director within a few months of being here! Excited for what 2022 will bring ??
