It's natural your business will evolve - in fact it's crucial

There's a lot of large businesses who are struggling, yesterday John Lewis announced they are shutting a few Waitrose stores in order to adapt their portfolio.

Smaller businesses can be more agile and adaptive to their environment, the consequences of not evolving can be more extreme, although I suggest the opportunities are greater.

There is a key factor in all of this, every business relies on human beings.

This also relies on Change, which can be a scary word (head in the sand time).

Whether in smaller or large business most human beings are specialist in their field, they are excellent at being a social media manager, accountant, engineer, coach however it takes more, especially when you're ready to grow your business.

It takes deciding you're willing to shift roles a little, to become more strategic and spend time developing and adapting your business so it can adapt to the changing world and grow.

You want this change to be as smooth as possible, to flow, so you are proactive and not reactive.

This does require you to step back a little from the detail, to be more efficient with your time.

You spend some time horizon scanning (got to love corporate words), seeing what's out there, where your industry is moving towards, what legislation is popping up, what markets you can go into, what others are doing, opportunities for collaboration.

Be warned this needs to be done in a constructive and consistent way, with a purpose and time limit. This is especially true if you're prone to liking shiny new ideas and concepts!

You then need to do something with this information, that's a blog for another day.

Set aside an hour this week to horizon scan, make sure you set an objective for this and enjoy!
