It's MUBI Time!

Quit the doom-scrolling through OTT platforms as you try and figure out what to watch. On this episode, we're joined by Svetlana, who programs and curates films for MUBI in India.

MUBI puts up one new film a day onto the platform. These films are vetted based on programming requirements that will resonate with the audience. As Svetlana puts it, these films aren't light but "gentle". They range from award-winning films to timeless classics and movies played at film festivals worldwide.?

Essentially, MUBI is looking for great-quality cinema across genres and languages. The films are esoteric and original in their structure, frames, performances and music. Svetlana goes on to give us some fantastic off-beat recommendations.

'In the Mood for Love' is a film with great emotional depth. Set in Hongkong, it is an icon of modern romance in the cinephile world.?

'The Worst Person In The World' asks some of life's big questions. It explores a unique perspective, asking, "if you knew when your life was going to end, would you live it differently?"?

'Paris 13th District' is shot in B&W and has a beautifully diverse cast. It shows a journey in love and the serendipity of meeting people.?

'Shiva Baby' is one of the most-loved on the platform and relatable to many Indians. The film has brilliant sound effects that build up, literally waiting for the character to explode!?

'The Booth' is a short film about a tender moment in time for a security guard who lives an otherwise repressed life.?

'About Love' captures three generations of a family. Set in the backdrop of wedding preparations, the film captures the strange affection that binds families together - without an ounce of melodrama.?

There are limited avenues for independent Indian films, and to help increase their discoverability, MUBI has 'strands'. The traction from Oscar-nominated films on the platform, too, spills over into other films, increasing their discoverability.?

If you're a cinephile, listen to the episode of "A Niche Thing' with Aneesh Bhasin, to explore the world of esoteric cinema, discover movies that have aged well and find some of the best International Film Festivals that take place within the country for you to devour and discover arthouse filmmakers!
