Its MOvember - the month of Gratitude & Giving!
This is most definitely my favorite time of the year. Since I came to the US, Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday - A day just to remind ourselves how blessed we are and express our gratitude for everything we have. I Am grateful that I woke up healthy today, had food on the table, a family to love, parents to care, friends to share, a dream job and colleagues who make me better every single day - Life is BEAUTIFUL!
It is also MOVEMBER ! The MO is back for the 8th year. And this year's MOtivation continues to be around bringing attention to mental health.
My experience working with schools, institutions and organisations on the topic of mental health has been a real eye opener. 1 in 3 Americans live with a mental illness, only half of them come forward to get support. And this does not include those who suffer from depression & anxiety disorders. The prevalence of Mental illness is twice as high among Young adults (aged 18-25).
In the past years, I have raised funds for various charities who work in this space. But I realise that with mental health, the most valuable (and scarce) resource is TIME. To be happy is a fundamental human right..... a state of natural being. Those of us who are not able to experience it need it to be nurtured - with attention, empathy, love and patience. That calls for TIME.
This MOvember, I committed 100 hours for “heart-felt” conversations with people at work, home and the community - to listen, learn and grow TOGETHER. I know each one of us has a cause that we care for deeply. And I ask you to go spend time for those causes - it is far more rewarding and valuable than the money we can offer. I can say for sure I have learned much more than I shared with each experience.
I end with a quote that inspires me - "Everyday starts with an act of Courage & Hope - Getting out of Bed!".
Here’s to health, happiness and a wonderful Thanksgiving!
