I already know what you’re thinking. “Candice! C’mon now! It is allll about being seen in the media!

Well, friend, I am here to share with you that it truly is MORE THAN A MEDIA INTERVIEW.

Many think that should be the main reason you’re hiring a Publicist for the long game and it is completely the opposite. Now, if you’re in a place where you need to create a digital footprint for yourself that is a bit different because you want your voice in the media space and be quoted in articles (will discuss that in another edition). This is for the people who are looking to hire a Publicist or PR Agency and understand the true partnership and the journey ahead.?

While media relations are a valuable component, PR encompasses much more. So, I decided to break down the FIVE reasons why PR is more than just media interviews:

Building Relationships

  • I know you’re tired of seeing this but it’s true. Trust and Credibility. PR is about establishing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders, including journalists, customers, and industry influencers. These relationships build trust and credibility, which are essential for long-term success.
  • Networking: Effective PR involves ongoing networking, creating opportunities for collaboration and support that extend far beyond a single interview. This also means getting out and actually meeting people in real life as well.

Strategic Brand Storytelling

  • Crafting a Consistent Narrative: PR professionals work to ensure that your brand’s story is consistently communicated across all channels, not just in media interviews. This includes social media, blogs, speaking engagements, and more.

  • Message Development: Developing key messages that align with your brand’s values and goals is a critical aspect of PR. These messages need to be integrated into every communication touchpoint.

Reputation Management

  • Crisis Communication: Yes, something you always need to be prepared for. PR involves preparing for and managing crises effectively. This goes beyond handling media inquiries during a crisis and includes proactive reputation management strategies.
  • Monitoring Public Perception: Continuous monitoring of public sentiment and media coverage allows PR professionals to address potential issues before they escalate. That also means to keep your Publicist or PR Agency abreast on anything that takes place involving you or your business.

Content Creation and Distribution

  • Creating Valuable Content: PR isn’t just about gaining media coverage; it’s also about creating and distributing valuable content that engages your audience. This includes press releases, blog posts, op-eds, and more.

  • Leveraging Multiple Channels: Effective PR strategies utilize a variety of channels to reach and engage with target audiences, ensuring that the message is widespread and impactful.

Measuring Impact

  • Evaluating Success Metrics: PR involves setting measurable goals and evaluating success through various metrics, such as media impressions, audience engagement, website traffic, monitoring short/long term goals and sentiment analysis. This helps in understanding the true impact of PR efforts beyond media interviews.

  • Adjusting Strategies: Based on the insights gained from these metrics, PR professionals continuously adjust strategies to improve effectiveness and align with business objectives.

In conclusion, PR is a comprehensive, strategic approach to managing and enhancing a brand’s reputation, visibility, and relationships. While media interviews play an important role, they are just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Effective PR requires a holistic view and a multifaceted strategy to achieve sustained success. It should never be in your strategy to move fast to get results. That is ultimately working backward.
