A business project took a few friends and I to Ile-Ife over the weekend. It was an opportunity to meet some team members and also welcome new ones as we work towards financial freedom. It was an awesome experience. A weekend filled with adventure and lot of lessons. The weekend provided a rare opportunity to make new friends with like passion. We shared experiences and it was a unique way to learn from one another.
After our event, we had some time to gist and one of the highlights of our discussion touched a sensitive cord on the inside of me. The need to raise a more responsible and goal oriented younger generation.
One of us who is a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) shared a few experiences and her concern about students. The behavior of students on campus and their attitude to their primary purpose while on campus calls for concern. The lecturer noted that one of the major goals she sets for her mentees is to graduate with, at least, 2:1 (second class upper). And so far, none of them has failed to attain that level. Obviously, she understands the fact that her assignment as a lecturer is more than teaching in the class.
As the discussion went on, she noted the need for parents to be more committed to their role in getting their children emotionally prepared for the life in tertiary institution. No doubt, the four walls of the university often test one’s maturity in handling life. In my view it should not be rushed into without adequate preparation, even though one can never prepare enough.
Parents and guardians, we have a huge role to play and we must understand that the role of healthy molding of the younger generation cannot be left in the hands of the lecturers. The bitter reality is that there are many ungodly lecturers at the university, thank God for someone like Mrs. Fagite who has taken it as a responsibility to go the extra mile.
In the coming weeks, we will discuss more on this very sensitive topic. I sincerely apologize for the delay in putting this article together today. I also want to specially appreciate all the good people out there who are doing their job with the fear of God.
Thanks for reading and have a blessed week.
Your friend in learning.
