"It's not me, it's you". ??? Gaslighting - the corrosive organizational disease

Gaslighting is a devious technique as it preys on our common Achilles heel of self-doubt.

Gaslighting is an organizational disease.

It’s under-discussed and until recently it’s been under-researched.

The term comes from the 1944 movie Gaslight where a husband, Gregory, convinces his wife Paula she is insane by dimming and brightening a gaslight. When she complains, he insists that she is imagining it.

In today's issue, we explore:

The Nature of the Mind

  • What gaslighting is from psychology and sociology points of view
  • - Why do people gaslight others?

The Nature of Career

  • -?What can organizations do to prevent a culture of gaslighting?
  • -?What can you do if you're being gaslighted?

Interesting and equally important topic Vanessa. I have to admit until I read this piece, I didn't have much of an idea. You have to be alert to patterns, particularly if you are the conscientious type who looks inwards when things don't go per plan. Thanks for sharing. Will be doing a closer reading later.

Good newsletter thank you - Gaslighting and Narcissistic personality disorder are terms thrown around frequently and not always used correctly. This really lays it out clearly with useful examples. In my experience, if your boss or anyone you are in a close relationship with has true Narcissitic personality disorder, there is a good chance you should remove yourself from the situation entirely. Glad you flagged seeking professional support, it is often required!
