It's Not Making Mistakes That Causes Problems!

How many mistakes have you ever made?

I don't mean in everyday life, though the same principles will probably apply, I mean while growing or even establishing your business?

And of those mistakes, how many have you admitted to? To yourself? To your clients? To the world?

You see, the truth is that we all make mistakes, don't we? We simply wouldn't be human if we didn't. And those mistakes can be caused by all sorts of different things - inexperience, for example, or arrogance, being too hasty, lack of planning, pride, or maybe even, simple tiredness. But at the end of the day, whatever the cause of the mistake, the most important thing of all, is what we do with it! Wouldn't you agree?

What's most important, vital in fact, is the decision we take after making any mistake, and by that, I mean the decision concerning what we do about the mistake we made.

Do we bury our heads in the sand and hope it will go away?

Do we look around to see if anyone else has noticed, and if not, walk away and hope someone else gets the blame?

Do we blame someone else anyway? Or make all sorts of excuses as to why we made the mistake in the first place.

Well of course, I can't stop you following any of those possible pathways, but I can offer an alternative that will see you turning every mistake into your next success, and I can only hope that you will see the benefits my three suggestions will bring to you...

ACCEPT the mistake(s) you've made:

Whether in your personal or business life, hiding away from mistakes you've made will never help you. Neither will it enable you to help others. The fact is, that whatever the outcome of the mistake, there will be plenty to learn from it, as long as we take ownership and don't pretend it had nothing to do with us. Open hearts, and open minds, along with a willingness to see our imperfections, will always allow us to take on new ideas, to try new ways of doing things, and to see how to be more successful next time.

ADMIT the mistakes!

Telling others might seem difficult, but believe me, you'll be amazed at the authenticity it gives you, as well as the opportunity and the ability it provides for you to share the learnings you've made. How much easier is it to follow someone who has walked down the path before you? How much more trust can you place in those who openly admit to their errors, explain what they learnt through making them, and then offer to show you the way you can avoid making them yourself?

ALLOW your business to grow through them!

Did you know that your greatest mistakes can actually become your biggest asset? You see, those who hide away from the errors they make, blaming another, or making up excuses, will be stuck in those errors for ever. In fact they are likely to keep repeating them until they've finally acknowledged what they're doing. BUT, those who acccept and admit their mistakes, will always become stronger, clearer and more confident in what they are doing, and in their ability to show others the path to success as well.

So, next time you find yourself taking the wrong decison, messing up something you were working on, or maybe losing a client because you didn't understand their needs, don't beat yourself up about it, or spend hours deliberating over the mistake and wishing you hadn't made it - what good is that?

Take my advice; accept your error and learn from it; admit it to those around you as soon as the time is right; then use it to power your business forward, because of one thing I am very sure; if YOU made a mistake and then learnt from it, there will be a whole queue of people who'd rather take your advice, and learn how to avoid it in the first place.

Great article, Angela Roth. Yes, admitting to the mistakes (to ourselves and others) is part of dealing with them and learning from them. Sometimes, we take on projects or do things that look great to start with but suddenly turn out to be the opposite, or we take something on DESPITE our instinct's warning noises or nudges and having to admit later that whatever we took on was a mistake.

I learned as a leader to be very open about my mistakes - and in doing so create an environment where pushing boundaries and taking reasonable risks is not only allowed but encouraged.

What a great post Angela Roth and a great reminder that if we don't succeed it doesn't mean we won't the next time!
