"It's Not Magic, It's Science!" Turns 2!

Happy Birthday "It's Not Magic, It's Science!"

In 2020, when the world came to a stop, STEM events were put on pause and parents had to become science teachers overnight I set out on a mission to become the mentor to all STEM mentors. During that challenging time I quickly saw a need to support youth that weren't going to have the same access to STEM enrichment and created one of the most innovative brands in STEM education: “It’s Not Magic, It’s Science!” I leveraged the entertainment factor of magic to increase excitement and awareness in STEM with science experiments disguised as magic tricks on TikTok!

The series quickly reached millions of views on as families across the globe were inspired to engage with science at-home in a manner that was as entertaining as it is educational! I designed each experiment with equity and access in mind so the majority of the experiments can be completed with low-cost items that you have at home or with materials that you can easily order on Amazon for only a few dollars. I helped mentors, parents and teachers see how much excitement you can spark with so little. I invited the world into my kitchen to help people see that STEM inspiration could happen anywhere!

In 2021, I began to partner with other STEM organizations to share the best practices from It’s Not Magic, It’s Science and to amplify the impact via STEM outreach and mentorship. I partnered with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers on Noches de Ciencias (Family Science Nights) and created resources for mentors from their students and professional chapters across the country could impact even more student’s with “It’s Not Magic, It’s Science!” We also added my wife Diana Mogena who is an industrial engineer to our content and branding to increase our representation.

I also partnered with MIND Research Institute to create special TikTok episodes (in English and Spanish) for their Family Math Weeks across some of the largest school districts in the country. My work with MIND helped reduce math anxiety for mentors and parents so that they can play a larger role in their children/mentees math journey.

I also brought “It’s Not Magic, It’s Science!” to nontraditional partners like the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team and Cedar Point Amusement Park who wanted to collaborate with Jay to create unique “It’s Not Magic, It’s Science!” content relevant to their brands so that they could increase STEM outreach and mentorship for school visits to the arena and amusement park.?

Despite the incredible success of the series and partnerships I knew something was missing. It was great to see so many students viewing and being inspired by our content, but I wanted to ensure they were having impactful hands-on experiences with "It's Not Magic, It's Science!" as well. My girls love it! It’s actually quite the kit! Especially for the price! The girls wanted to do all the experiments at once! The directions are perfect, very clear and easy for kids to read. The videos are extremely helpful as a great quick way to see how the experiments work. The supplies aren’t complicated and are also supplies you could easily get again to try the experiment many many times. I have bought more expensive kits that are less exciting. I also think tying the science to the theme of magic is fantastic. Kids really like doing things that seem impossible or really make you think about how it happened!
