It’s Not Just What You Know, It’s Who You Know That REALLY Counts

We have all heard the saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”

While this phrase might sound like a cliché, its truth resonates deeply across every facet of business and life.

Networking is not just a strategy for job seekers - it’s a cornerstone of success that influences opportunities, growth, and even personal fulfilment. But what does it really mean to harness the power of your connections? And how can you do so in a way that feels authentic and meaningful?

The Misconception of Networking

When most people think of networking, they picture a job seeker desperately handing out business cards at a crowded event or connecting with random people on LinkedIn, hoping for a favour.

But networking is so much more than that.

It’s about building relationships that add value to both parties, creating a web of connections that can support and uplift you in various aspects of life.

Whether you’re a CEO, an entrepreneur, or someone just starting in your career, your network can be your greatest asset. It’s not just about getting ahead—it’s about growing as a person, learning from others, and being in a position to offer help when needed.

Networking - Its A Lifelong Journey

One of my earliest experiences with networking was during my first job at IBM.

I was new, eager, and a bit na?ve.

I thought my qualifications, but more my hard work, would be enough to propel me forward.

And while they did help, it was a casual conversation with my mentor that opened the door to my next big opportunity and first international opportunity. We were talking about a project I was passionate about, and he mentioned that his friend in another department was looking for someone with my skills. That conversation led to a project that significantly boosted my career.

This experience taught me that networking is not just about what you can get from others.

It’s about being open to new possibilities and recognising that opportunities often come from the most unexpected places.

Since then, I have made it a point to build genuine relationships wherever I go—not just because it might lead to something beneficial for me, but because it’s enriching to connect with others on a human level.

The Ripple Effect of Relationships

Consider the story of a small business owner I know.

When you invest in relationships, they pay dividends in ways you can’t always predict

She started her company with little more than a great idea and a lot of determination.

But what truly made the difference was her network. She reached out to former colleagues, mentors, and even acquaintances from community events. These connections didn’t just offer her business - they provided advice, mentorship, and support.

Her business grew NOT because of a massive advertising budget or a viral marketing campaign but because she had people who believed in her and wanted to see her succeed.

This ripple effect is the real magic of networking.

When you invest in relationships, they pay dividends in ways you can’t always predict. A recommendation here, a piece of advice there, and suddenly you’re part of a network that’s working together to lift each other up.

Networking in the Digital Age

With the rise of social media, particularly LinkedIn, networking has become more accessible than ever. But accessibility doesn’t mean ease.

It’s easy to connect with someone online, but how do you turn that connection into a meaningful relationship?

Start by being authentic.

Don’t just connect with people because you think they can do something for you.

Engage with their content, comment on their posts, share insights, and offer help where you can.

The most effective networks are built on trust and mutual respect, not transactional exchanges.

I have found that some of the most rewarding connections I have made on LinkedIn started with a simple comment or message of appreciation. From there, conversations grew organically, leading to collaborations, partnerships, and, yes, even friendships.

The key is to approach networking with a mindset of giving, not just taking.

My Practical Tips for Building a Strong Network

  1. Be Curious - Ask questions, show interest in others’ work, and listen actively. People appreciate genuine curiosity and are more likely to open up to you.
  2. Offer Value - Networking isn’t a one-way street. Think about what you can offer to others, whether it’s your expertise, a helpful resource, or even just a listening ear.
  3. Stay in Touch - Relationships need nurturing. Don’t just connect and forget. Check in periodically, share relevant content, or simply ask how someone is doing.
  4. Be Authentic - People can sense when you’re being disingenuous. Be yourself, and build relationships based on honesty and mutual respect.
  5. Leverage LinkedIn Wisely - Use LinkedIn to not only expand your network but also to maintain it. Engage with your connections’ content, join groups related to your interests, and don’t be afraid to reach out with a personal message.

Your Network Is Your Net Worth

At the end of the day, the strength of your network can often determine the trajectory of your career and personal growth.

It’s not just about who you know...it’s about who knows you—and what they know about you.

Are you someone who adds value to others’ lives? Are you someone who’s reliable, trustworthy, and genuinely interested in helping others succeed? If so, your network will naturally expand, and the opportunities will follow.

So, here’s my challenge to you - Take a moment today to reach out to someone in your network.

Maybe it’s a colleague you haven’t spoken to in a while, a mentor who’s guided you, or even a new connection on LinkedIn.

Send a message, start a conversation, and see where it leads. You never know—the next big opportunity might just be one connection away.

I am always happy to connect on LinkedIn and continue the conversation. I’m always open to meeting new people and exploring how we can support each other in our professional journeys.
