This is a message I wrote and taught at Seacrest Presbyterian Church as an intern January 2016, I appreciated that praise I was given by Former Pastor Dr. Ronald Siegenthaler each time I taught, at first I didn’t grasp that he meant it, a Politician thing, as if each person who shook yor Hand really voted for you, I would have won not by 2-1 majorities, but 100%, Dr, Siegenthaler really meant He “Hoped Paul was teaching Tonight” GOD bless this man.
I loved Teaching it then, and Ask the HOLY SPIRIT to allow the words of a fool, through HIS word to Bring Honor and Glory to the FATHER, SON, And HOLY SPIRIT, ONE GOD, Forever & Ever Amen.
In life we hear all the time, “Don’t Sweat The Details” and yet my favorite TV detective Colombo, and for that matter all of the detective shows actually tell us the exact opposite, “Don’t Miss The Details”.
I would humbly suggest, and pray the HOLY SPIRIT shows us, that the proper reading of the Whole of Scripture is to never miss the details.
This lesson really is that example, as it takes all of Scripture (And The HOLY SPIRIT Opening our eyes) to understand each point accurately.
You see understanding Genesis 24 helps us to understand this Luke 7 passage

Call To Worship
Isa 6:1 ? In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.
?2 Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
?3 And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory."
?4 And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke.
?5 ? Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."

Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee
Covenant Presbyterian Church Nashville, Tennessee, Mr. Samuel Metzger
First Reading (I would suggest reading all of Genesis 24)
Ge 24:25 Again she said to him, "We have plenty of both straw and feed, and room to lodge in."
?26 Then the man bowed low and worshiped the LORD.
?27 He said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, the LORD has guided me in the way to the house of my master's brothers."
?28 Then the girl ran and told her mother's household about these things.
?29 ? Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran outside to the man at the spring.
?30 When he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's wrists, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, "This is what the man said to me," he went to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.
?31 And he said, "Come in, blessed of the LORD! Why do you stand outside since I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels?"
?32 So the man entered the house. Then Laban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.
?33 But when food was set before him to eat, he said, "I will not eat until I have told my business." And he said, "Speak on."
?34 So he said, "I am Abraham's servant.
?35 "The LORD has greatly blessed my master, so that he has become rich; and He has given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and maids, and camels and donkeys.
?36 "Now Sarah my master's wife bore a son to my master in her old age, and he has given him all that he has.
?37 "My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live;
?38 but you shall go to my father's house and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.'
?39 "I said to my master, 'Suppose the woman does not follow me.'
?40 "He said to me, 'The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you to make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father's house;
?41 then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives; and if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.'
?42 "So I came today to the spring, and said, 'O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I go successful;
?43 behold, I am standing by the spring, and may it be that the maiden who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, "Please let me drink a little water from your jar";
?44 and she will say to me, "You drink, and I will draw for your camels also"; let her be the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master's son.'
?45 "Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew, and I said to her, 'Please let me drink.'
?46 "She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, 'Drink, and I will water your camels also'; so I drank, and she watered the camels also.
?47 "Then I asked her, and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him'; and I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.
?48 "And I bowed low and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had guided me in the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son.
?49 "So now if you are going to deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, let me know, that I may turn to the right hand or the left."
?50 Then Laban and Bethuel replied, "The matter comes from the LORD; so we cannot speak to you bad or good.
?51 "Here is Rebekah before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has spoken."
?52 When Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the ground before the LORD.
?53 The servant brought out articles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.
?54 ? Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night. When they arose in the morning, he said, "Send me away to my master."
?55 But her brother and her mother said, "Let the girl stay with us a few days, say ten; afterward she may go."
?56 He said to them, "Do not delay me, since the LORD has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master."

Christian What Do You Believe?
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The Holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.
Amen.

A Sinful Woman Forgiven
Luke 7:
Lu 7:36 ? Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.
?37 And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,
?38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.
?39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner."
?40 And Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he replied, "Say it, Teacher."
?41 "A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

?42 "When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?"
?43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have judged correctly."
?44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
?45 "You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.
?46 "You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.
?47 "For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little."
?48 Then He said to her, "Your sins have been forgiven."
?49 Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?"
?50 And He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

1: What is the background of the water to wash ones feet
The Bible gives us 6 clear example of the use of water for one’s feet.
Let’s quickly go through them:
Genesis 18 :4 The Oaks of Mamre and the three visitors
Ge 18:3 and said, "My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant.
?4 "Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
Genesis 19:2 The two visitors (Angels) to lot in Sodom Ge 19:1 ? Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.
?2 And he said, "Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way." And they said, "No, but we will spend the night in the open square."
Genesis 24: 32 Then the man came to the house. And he unloaded the camels, and provided straw and feed for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.
Abraham’s servant is offered water
Genesis ?43:24 So the man brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed.
Joseph before he reveals himself as their brother shows this practice is more than a jewish custom.
1Sa 25:41 Then she arose, bowed her face to the earth, and said, "Here is your maidservant, a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord."
2Sa 11:8 And David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and wash your feet." So Uriah departed from the king's house, and a gift of food from the king followed him.
?
?A typical Eastern host might bow, greet, and kiss his guest, then offer water to allow the guest to wash his feet or have servants do it Wikipedia
?The rite of foot washing finds its roots in scripture. Even after the?death of the apostles?or the end of the?Apostolic Age, the practice was continued.
It appears to have been practiced in the?early centuries of post-apostolic Christianity, though the evidence is scant. For example,?Tertullian?(145–220) mentions the practice in his?De Corona, but gives no details as to who practiced it or how it was practiced. It was practiced by the?Church at Milan?(ca. A.D. 380), is mentioned by the?Council of Elvira?(A.D. 300), and is even referenced byAugustine?(ca. A.D. 400). Observance of foot washing at the time of baptism was maintained in?Africa,?Gaul,?Germany,?Milan, northern?Italy, and?Ireland. According to the?Mennonite Encyclopedia"St. Benedict's?Rule?(A.D. 529) for the?Benedictine Order?prescribed hospitality feetwashing in addition to a communal feetwashing for humility"; a statement confirmed by the?Catholic Encyclopedia.[3]?It apparently was established in the?Roman church, though not in connection with baptism, by the 8th century. The?Albigenses?observed feetwashing in connection with communion, and the?Waldenses' custom was to wash the feet of visiting ministers. There is some evidence that it was observed by the early?Hussites. The practice was a meaningful part of the 16th century?radical reformation. Foot washing was often "rediscovered" or "restored" by Protestants in revivals of religion in which the participants tried to recreate the faith and practice of the apostolic era?which they had abandoned or lost. 2: Why is it such a big deal, and why speak on what appears to be a simple mistake by Simon the Pharisee?
?It’s a big deal as we have seen the practice is a cultural staple, and was to be given to ALL who entered your House.
This practice has gone on for AS LONG as people walked bare foot, or had sandals.
Don’t miss the point that it is not strange to the Egyptian for the Governor of Egypt to offer water for these Jews and it doesn’t raise an eyebrow, yet when food is set out all three groups have to eat at their own tables.
Genesis 43:32 So they set him a place by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat food with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.
?
So to suggest that this was a simple mistake is hogwash!
But again why is this such a big deal?
This was in my opinion and I believe history has proven to be on my side a calculated move by Simon the Pharisee?

3: What is the underlying story?
By now I hope it is clear that this is a terrible affront to Jesus, and is equal today’s slamming a door in one’s face or even a spit in the face.
Let’s go deeper.
When Jesus went and spoke at Nazareth, his home town people sneered, and yes it was a SNEER.
When we search the culture of the time we read that Socrates suggested a person could move up two classes in their lives, but no more than two. To be blunt a Carpenters kid could NEVER hope to join the world of teachers or Philosophers, as this would be way up the class ladder. It won’t surprise you to know that Socrates believe the highest class was the Philosopher of whom he was a member. But it is the thoughts of the mindset of the day when Jesus walked the Earth.
This is one of the keys to why when They say “we know you, you’re the Carpenter’s kid” If you ever read that as only an address, please reread it from now on as hostility addressed to Jesus who dares enter the realm as instructors.
Simon is making it clear what he thinks of Jesus and no it is NOT an Accident he does not provide Jesus water for his feet.
Jesus as is the case throughout the Gospels turn’s this into a tremendous teaching moment, and only addresses Simon’s affront when Simon questions Jesus’s allowing the “sinful” woman to sit at his feet, and wash them with her tears.

4: Are we ever guilty of not giving Jesus water for His feet?
First what do we mean by not giving Jesus water for his feet?
Well this is a lifestyle question, and the many things we need to guard against and yes this is your intern getting material straight from some his own struggles, though I am sure many of us would say, we too struggle with these things.
1: Do we revere the name of Jesus Christ as we ought to or are we easy to use the Lord’s name in frustration?
2: Are we offended for the name of Jesus as it is used in vain in Movies, conversation around us?
3: This will be closer to the text and is the major point, DO WE VIEW OTHERS as the Pharisee did as Sinners, and thus elevating ourselves to the realm of God?
Using the Lord’s name in frustration is an inexcusable act, and one I struggle with, and constantly ask the Lord’s forgiveness, and your forgiveness. The 3rd commandment is crystal clear Ex 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
It shows that my real struggle and perhaps yours is that I do not Love the Lord with all my heart all my soul and all my mind. Even though it IS WHAT I DESIRE!
It drives us to the Paul discourse of “Oh Wretched man that I am why do I do the thing I do and the things I want to do I don’t do!!!”
Next this is a true cultural battle the movies & “comedy” today are disgusting in the use of our Lord’s name.
Are we horribly offended at such writing and performance, or do we help fill the collection plates of the Movie makers and comedians by giving them our approval with our dollars.
This is the example I need to reexamine my choice of entertainment to see what avenues I may not have shut down. I also need to review my email correspondence with ?Movie Studio’s asking them why they have no fear of use the Lord our God’s name in vain.
I can tell you shamefully I have in the last 10 years sent NO Such Email.
But am I alone?
I fear not and this might be the heart of the problem.
The polls in 1990 suggested 86% of US Citizens called themselves Christian and today it is 73% a sad decline, but still, I have a retail background, I worked in the Lumber business for 30years, and if you told me of a sure way to sell your product was to market 73% of Christians I would do it in a heartbeat.
But why is Hollywood comfortable using the name of Jesus Christ in vain?
I need to be blunt here, it appears I am not alone in not raising my concerns.
The basic economics scream if the 73% who claim to be Christians really were Christians, marketers and Movie makers would be nuts to not market toward that number.
Finally and this is the true point of the encounter,
How do we welcome the “outsider”, are we showing the Love of Christ to all who come in, and in our daily walk?
When the brother or sister are struggling, it may be a simple hug, or handshake, or remembering the struggles of a brother or sister and asking them how things are going and assuring them you are praying for them.
These simple steps are important and talks of a heart issues
?It is the danger for the Church, and as Jesus reminds us it is the small things that we need to guard against as He said “
beware of the yeast of the Pharisees”?
So this is perhaps when we look at others as sinners, we slip into the camp of Simon the Pharisee, and THIS IS NOT THE ONLY TIME JESUS exposes someone’s heart 19 times the term Sinners is used in the Gospels, only in ???Matthew 26:45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.
& Mark 14:41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners
We cannot as a Church turn a blind eye to sin, and yet at the same time NEVER forget we too are sinners saved by the Grace of God in Christ Jesus.
Simon sadly through his self-righteousness, missed that fact that he too was as much a sinner as the Woman he was singling out.
May we as a Church remember at all times, our door is open to all sinners, as all who enter will only find sinners, who’s only difference is the work of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ
