If you are thinking of buying a holiday home in the Costa del Sol or even relocating here, it is not just the beaches and sea views that this area is renowned for.
The Malaga region is famous for its whitewashed mountain villages. Mijas Pueblo, Benalmadena Pueblo, Estepona and Benahavis are probably the most famous… but there are more.
Firstly, 111km from Malaga, is what is considered the most beautiful white washed village in the area - Casares. It is a network of beautiful white cottages and houses with red tiled roofs stretching across the Crestellina Mountain Range. There is a huge Arabic influence in this village with the remains of the ancient Arabic fortress, and the beautiful mountain top church is a must see.
Next is the Roman town of Gaucin. It is perched on the mountains of the Sierra del Hacho with views over the Genal Valley and the Ronda Mountains. There is a fantastic Roman fortress that was extended by the Arabs, which is lauded as an impressive architectural complex.
Algatocin, set on the hill of Fraille, has a huge Arabic influence, but the town centre is built in a Moorish style. There are also 18th century houses with porticoed facades and the Hermitage of Calvario above the town.
And then there is Ronda. It is a stunning city built on a plateau of rock next to a 100m gorge that was formed by a natural accident. The city is divided in two by the gorge with the old town to the south and the new town to the north. Some of Ronda′s highlights include – the 18th Century New Bridge and the 1616 Old Bridge, Mondragon Palace and the Convent of Santo Domingo.
