It's the journey, not the destination...

Achievement motivation is a type of intrinsic motivation that drives people to pursue and achieve specific goals because they have the desire to do so. In other words, those who are motivated by achievement do something because they enjoy the process, rather than doing it for a reward at the end.

Examples of achievement-based motivation include:

  • A parent who is teaching their young child proper manners so that they can be perceived as a capable caregiver.
  • A person who creates daily checklists so that they can cross everything off and feel more accomplished.
  • An elderly person who takes up yoga and swimming because they’re concerned about losing their physical abilities.

Those who are driven by achievement motivation are typically self-motivated, and the ‘reward’ that this type of motivation gives is largely internal. This is because anyone who is motivated by achievement is subsequently motivated by the idea of seeming or feeling competent.

Can you think of anything you’ve done recently that was motivated by feeling a sense of achievement?

Have a great evening!

Sean Purcell Sounds like a great read! Achievement-based motivation is such a powerful driver. Looking forward to diving in and tackling that question at the end. ??
