It's Human Nature to Poop Your Pants

Is it human nature to change, or to stay the same??

On one hand we like to be able to rely on things, consistency, familiarity; to know that some things will be a certain way.

On the other hand, we like new things, new places, a new car, moving to a new home, starting a new relationship.?

Obviously, both are necessary for a time, neither is right or wrong, and most of us have varying degrees of both.?

So, is it human nature to change, or to stay the same?

It is human nature to poop your pants.

Seriously.?

When we are babies we poop our pants many times a day.?

It comes quite naturally, it’s easy, someone cleans us up, no worries, life is good… why change???

So jeez, then these silly grown-ups give us this crazy new idea…?

What if we?didn’t?poop our pants and instead pooped in the potty?

Whoa!?

That’s outside. That’s revolutionary. It’s like nothing we’ve ever known or done before!

So... we resist. All of us.

We like the way things have been going and… hello, it’s working, can’t you see that?

Think about it, to someone who’s lived their entire life doing something one way, to be introduced to a different way is a disruption.?

(Are you applying this yet, as a metaphor in your life?)

And these larger humans insist that we start pooping in the potty.

They play on our egos by saying, “It’s time to be a big boy and poop in the potty;” or they use social proof: “All the other little girls poop in the potty.”?

And finally they get directive and give us consequences for not pooping in the potty.

Then, slowly, something starts to take hold…

We try it.?

Enthusiastically, or begrudgingly we try it.?

And… guess what… it feels?better?not to have a poopy diaper!?

It smells better.?

It feels clean.

And it’s freeing to not wear a diaper… we can run so much faster!

Better yet, our parents and siblings sing our praises and reward us!

So, pretty soon we join the great potty poopers of the world.

(I think they have a Facebook Group and MeetUps in most cities).

And now, of course we can’t fathom pooping in our pants on purpose, right?

(Well most of us???)

And that is what I believe is most foundational with regard to human nature:?

It is human nature to improve. To grow.

Staying the same is necessary for a time, and for some longer than others.?

However, to stay the same for too long is stagnation.?

It becomes apathy.?

Atrophy.?

Rot.

My father, like many people who live in fearful, semi-life-paralysis, had an extremely effective way to keep from changing. He just said it:

“Well, that’s the way I am and I’m not going to change!”

And do you realize there are companies and organizations who have the exact same poisoned philosophy, leadership and culture??

For them I offer this warning: the writing is on the wall.?

The number one reason companies and organizations hire me is they want me to help them manage change…?

My job is to transform their mindset from “managing change” to “creating change.”?

Here’s why…?

Growth…?means change.?

If you as an individual, as a team, or as a company, have a negative mindset around change that bleeds into your ability -?and necessity -?to grow… and that is a death nell.?

So, how’s your life??

How’s your business??

If you’re content with the way things are and do not want change… well, good luck because,?you will have serious trouble!?

I invite you to consider that your unwillingness to change is, well… like pooping your pants.

And nobody likes adults with stinky diapers.?

So, however you do it start to imagine and envision positive change - to your life, your business, your locations, your relationships, your health, even your spirituality.

Start to imagine how great, how freeing, how healthy, and how profitable it might be to… stop pooping your pants.

Live truly, truly live,

Rayburn
