It's how you make them feel, that they will remember
What is your morning routine?
Part of my morning routine is to make a cup of coffee. For me, this is a good way for me to start the day. One morning though, I decided it was time for something different. When I opened the cupboard where the teas were. I saw a pack of Instant Cinnamon Bun Latte. The moment I saw this pack, it immediately brought a massive smile to my face. Why? Let me explain.
I was sitting at my desk working at home during the pandemic, and our buzzer went; this most often means a delivery; it was our postman with a small box addressed to me. When I opened the box, inside was a handwritten note from my then manager Jane Marshall, with an assortment of items, some packs of sweets, hand gel, and a pack of Instant Cinnamon Bun Latte, among other things.
Jane had decided to send the entire team a small package. To this day, I feel that someone I work with took the time to send their staff something personal. This small gesture was something that I very much appreciated. Even many months later, when I saw the coffee pack, I was reminded again of how I was made to feel appreciated and valued as part of the team. That's why despite the fact I had completely forgotten about the package, seeing the package brought back to my mind how it felt to receive the package that morning.
Do you need to give someone a gift to make someone feel good? No.
When you see something they have done well, take a moment to compliment someone. Saying good morning to that same person you see each day. Saying thank you to the security guard, post person, delivery person, and just about anyone. Tell the kitchen staff if you had a fantastic meal at a restaurant. If you like me, you are somewhat shy, then send an email to the manager; what greater pleasure than to share a compliment? What does it cost you a little time, some effort, maybe? Even just an "it's great to see you." can make a huge difference (thank you, Rob Sewell for leading by example)
How does it make the recipient feel? Do you remember how a compliment made you feel? How does it feel when someone does something nice for you? They will remember how you made them feel.
