It's not how fast you react that makes you successful; it's how well you predict.
A shared strategy for business and photography.
In photography, especially sports or live events, getting the perfect shot is less about clicking away and more about anticipation, understanding, and strategy.?
Know Your Scene
The best photographers spend time getting to know their subjects. They know the players, the rivalries, the game rules and strategies, and what's at stake. This depth of knowledge allows them to anticipate the moments that make for a compelling story.
Positioning is Key
Photographers don't follow the action; they predict it. They position themselves in the best spot based on where they believe the action will unfold. This isn't luck; it's strategic placement based on experience and understanding.
Patience is Your Friend
The most memorable shots often come from waiting for the right moment. This patience, rooted in confidence that the moment will come, allows photographers to capture the most impactful images.
Do Your Homework
In this particular case, volleyball photography was new to me. The opportunity came about through a personal connection—my daughter's boyfriend is a player at Carlow University. The venue's relatively low profile gave me unique access, allowing me to shoot from virtually any location around the court. Before my first shot, I researched elements of great volleyball photography. My first time out was a learning experience; with each subsequent game, I refined my technique. By the last game of the season, I was pleased with the outcome.
Emotion Sells
I’ve found it’s not always about the “action” shots. The other half of the story happens before and after every play. Reaction shots! I love them. A photo that captures emotion adds tremendously to the story. Understanding the mood and dynamics of the scene helps photographers anticipate and capture these key moments.
Flexibility
Even with all the planning in the world, sometimes the unexpected provides the best opportunities. Being flexible and ready to adapt to the unfolding action is crucial.
The best moments often come from knowing where to look, when to wait, and when to click, whether in photography, business, or life.
