Please explain why it is detrimental to the mission of non-profit organizations if they do not maintain open communication with the public?
When it comes to the public, a lack of transparency on the part of non-profit organizations is problematic for a number of different reasons. The following are some of the more important ones:
Trust: In order to be successful and fulfill their objective, non-profit organizations need the support and confidence of the general public. It is possible for a non-profit organization to lose the public's trust and confidence if it does not communicate openly and honestly. Some non-profit organizations are more interested in creating the illusion that they are doing something in the public interest, but nothing can be further from the truth. Make sure you get to know the charities you support and that they do meaningful work in the community.
Funding: In order to maintain their operations, the majority of charitable organizations rely on financial contributions from members of the general public. If a non-profit organization is not open and honest with its contributors, it may be less likely to receive financial assistance. People want to know that their support is being utilized properly.

Accountability: Non-profit organizations are held responsible before the general public for how they use their resources, including monetary donations and financing from the government. It may be difficult for members of the public to hold a non-profit organization accountable for its conduct if the organization does not practice transparency. Look for an organization's 990 and examine whether the organization is willing to answer questions regarding use of funding. People love to take pictures of big checks, but it is interesting to know how that donation was utilized.
Reputation: The reputation of a non-profit organization is a crucial aspect in determining whether or not it will be successful in achieving its purpose and gaining support from the general public. It is possible for a non-profit organization to suffer damage to its reputation, which will make it more challenging for the organization to accomplish its objectives. Some people love the adulation of being seen as someone that is always service above all else.
Overall, maintaining trust with the public, securing money, being accountable, and protecting one's reputation are all reasons why it is essential for non-profit organizations to be honest with the public.
