Question from a subscriber: "It's hard with all I have on my plate and I find myself struggling to stay motivated to go the extra mile in my practice. I feel like, meh."


I about to upset alot of you who are expecting me to say something like, "You need to sleep more, work less, and do more self care."

Take these actions TODAY:

  • The biggest thing is stop spending time with lazy, whining, or negative people. I used to have this close friend. The person was so averse to work, it was as if she was semi-retired in early adulthood. Well, my productivity at work started going down the more time I spent with her. Make sure the people you choose to talk to on a daily basis are hard working, agreeable, positive, inspiring people.
  • Whenever a negative thought comes into your mind, drop to the floor and do 10 push ups. Or, do something else physically stimulating like standing up and flapping your arms for 10 seconds. Physical state impacts mental state. Get the weakness out of your mind and your body.
  • Whenever you recall a past failure, say this to yourself, "WHO CARES. I'll try something different."
  • Stop relying on your feelings to motivate you. See it as your responsibility to achieve great things - that it is your duty, your call, your obligation to the world. When you do that, the fact you feel tired or don't feel like responding to email starts not to matter.
  • As a last resort, go check out your two closest competitors and get a little fired up about things they are doing better than you.
  • Get used to things being hard. Expect it. That way at least your mind is ready.
  • When you feel the urge to procrastinate, say these words to yourself, "Who else can I help? Who else needs to hear from me today?" You know there is someone out there suffering who needs you desperately. Call that to mind in any moment when you are lagging.

Being hungry and motivated to do better for yourself, your team, your clients, and your community is a decision not a happenstance. Living in a positive, inspiring way will magnetize those around you, both in business and personal life.


Make the decision to change hearts, starting with your own! It's a beautiful way to live!

Regarding having too much on your plate: not everything needs to be done. It amazes me how much time people spend "straightening up their office." I learned a long time ago to delegate things like filing (electronic or physical filing) to someone else. If you have to do it, think "fat folders" not skinny folders. And a lot of things just don't have to be done. You can ignore most advertising emails you get, newsletters, etc. If you have too much on your plate, the solution is to take things off your plate. You may be feeling "meh" because you are trying to build a bigger plate for yourself. Don't be a glutton, be a gourmet. Regarding the lack of motivation: Part of your job as a financial advisor is to sell other people on the value of working with a financial advisor, specifically on the value of working with YOU. If you are not feeling motivated, the first person you have to sell on the value of working with you is yourself. Sell yourself first. When you are totally sold on the value other people get from working with you, you'll be motivated.
