It's Graduation Season!

Having been in the field of education, this is a poignant time of year. Graduation Season, the completion of one stage and the peek into the next.?

I remember this feeling as a graduate myself and as a parent, teacher and principal. The view is very different for each but the emotions are the same.?

As a graduate, I remember the look back, the nostalgia and the celebration over the period of time that I had just completed, elementary school, high school, college, graduate school. I marveled at how little I knew at the beginning and how much I felt I knew at the end of that journey.?

The day was also tinged with a knot in my stomach because just above the rise of graduating there was the next plunge into a new venture. The peak at the top of the rollercoaster of life.?

As a parent, we experience these formal graduations as well as informal ones. The graduations from infant to toddler to preschooler to child to adolescent to young adult. From dependent to independent child. With each new accomplishment we experience the same look back and the same feeling at the crest of each new rise.?

There’s an excitement to these times and a fear as well. Will our children be able to meet the challenges of their next phase? How can we be sure? How will we handle the next phase?

These questions are the stuff of parental nightmares and can be dampened or dispelled by connecting to our Future Family Vision.?

For me, that meant looking back and looking forward. Whenever, I felt myself at the crest, my heart pounding, anxiety creeping. I took a beat and calmed myself. I connected to the Future Family Vision that I had created, then I took a look back at what I had done to get to that vision.?

Vision is what keeps us pointing in the right direction and makes reviews like the one above not only bearable but comforting. When I looked back, I didn’t see perfection. I saw something better, I saw imperfect, consistent effort and attention. I saw intention and resilience.?

How do you use vision to keep you headed in the direction of your desired future?
