It’s Not Goodbye, It's See You Later

As an inspirational author my favorite poem is Footprints because of how its meaningful last line makes me feel. It makes one believe that someone is always watching over us and that we're never truly alone, especially during our most trying times.

However, it was never my initial intention to write about grief and loss. In fact, I actually started writing about twenty years ago when my mother approached my father, brothers and I about an article she had read.

In it a family had decided during a one-year period to write a personal memento about how they felt about one another for their respective birthdays. My mother thought we should do the same, claiming that they would make wonderful keepsakes. She was right!

We were all horrified: “Imagine grown men writing down their feelings!" Nevertheless, we all set to work. It was surprising to me how freely my words seemed to flow onto the page. Not surprising was what I wrote always seemed to end with a meaningful last line.

After that first year past, I started to write more frequently, being particularly inspired by those near and dear to my heart. Unfortunately that meant not only writing on happy occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, but through tragedies as well.

Although it was gratifying when family and friends thought my writing was good I needed to know what others thought, and it didn't take long to find out as hundreds of rejection letters would attest.

I continued undaunted sending out three submissions for every rejection received, having always thought that my experiences in life although neither more extraordinary nor less engaging than anyone else’s involved universally heartfelt sentiments that should be shared.

I have since been fortunate enough to have my parables published in dozens of inspirational journals, magazines, periodicals and on numerous websites. The definition of a parable is a symbolic short story that illustrates or teaches some truth, religious principle or moral lesson.

My parables include; A Mother’s Work Is Never Done, If Not For You, God Only Knows, Moments, Like Father Like Son, Remember When, These Days, The Promise and many others.

Grief is one of society’s most misunderstood and profoundly difficult experiences that cannot be resolved by closure alone, if there's even such a thing, but by a slow measure of acceptance that only the passage of time and words of comfort can provide.

In 2017 after the loss of my father It’s Not Goodbye, It's See You Later; a collection of inspirational parables was published in keeping with my belief that those who have experienced loss should support one another’s efforts to comfort others.
