It's a Good Time to be an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Do you know what a highly sought-after job in the Club industry is? Look no further than the role of Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, one of the most requested staffing positions for the better part of a decade. The role of assistant has long been a challenge to fill due to numerous reasons, including the Great Recession, subsequent golf course closures, shrinking staffing pool, and the overall demands of the job.

Paints a bit of a dim picture doesn't it? We are happy to report however, that the tide seems to be turning for the better. According to the National Golf Foundation's February 29, 2024 report, "there were fewer course closures in 2023 than any year dating back to 2004, prior to the Great Recession." And ever since Covid, clubs have reassessed the value of the assistant position for the better. Additionally, the following improvements are contributing to the overall appeal of the job. Those are:

  • Salary increases, along with more attractive benefit packages.
  • Clubs are implementing succession plans for their superintendents.
  • Assistants benefit from mentorship and guidance by senior superintendents.
  • Superintendents understand the value and need of work-life balance in the new generation of assistants.
  • Superintendents and club leadership recognize the importance of staff mental well-being, encouraging breaks, downtime, and incorporating wellness programs through their club's benefit packages.?

Although the position has much improved on salary, benefits, and work-life balance, the role does require education and skills. Clubs have boosted the appeal, but still expect dedicated and talented individuals to run golf course operations. Those seeking the role of assistants can distinguish themselves from their competition with 2 or 4 year agronomy degree.?Just the same, individuals entering the profession may also rely on certificates and years of course experience.

There is no exact formula to filling this integral role, but for a twenty-something entering the field, there is no better job for learning, advancing, and eventually transitioning to a senior position. Most importantly, a love for the profession is key.
