The world as we know it!
The world as we know it! Maybe that is already a distant memory for all of us. The last couple of weeks, seem to come from a very long and badly scripted movie that happens once in a century. Actually, it is true that after the Spanish Flue, a hundred years later the Coronavirus did strike the whole world. Because of the connectivity, mobility of the society today, the spreading of the virus was very fast and with devastating results for many people all over the world. It caught us all unprepared, including governments from the most developed countries, businesses, organizations, and people.
One of the songs that comes into my mind, almost daily, is from R.E.M. and it is called “It’s the end of the world as we know it”! R.E.M. were quite big in the nineties, not my favorite kind of music back then as I was more into Alternative, Rock and Heavy Metal. They were too soft for my taste, anyway!
After the total lock down, and when the danger from coronavirus will be gone, I am sure that world as we know it will be different. Think of the things that preoccupied people before, and think of what should have been really done. All the money going for irrelevant things, the so-called influencers/bloggers (Kardashians being the striking example), to football players (Neymar getting 250 million euros for his transfer to PSG), actors getting paid tens of millions of dollars for 1 movie (George Clooney earned almost 240 million dollars in 2018). What did they do, to deserve it? Think if half of that money would have gone to the health systems, education, research, medical personnel, hospitals, vaccines, ventilators, etc.!
Do not get me wrong, I like George Clooney, Messi, and other public people, but I think there should be some redistribution of how the society spends money and where! I am a big fan of the Free Market, and I do believe that the market has a self-regulating model! Nevertheless, the effect of the lock down as the result of the coronavirus has changed many things and will change many things in the future. Think of the big crowds in concerts, stadiums, travelling in packed trains, buses and metro, would someone just go on with that as it used to be before? Do you think people would think twice before attending such events? Having had all the social-distances guidelines for many weeks and months, it will change us. My first initial thinking is yes please, let us go back to the normality as we know it, however with better distribution of wealth and with more attention to what is truly relevant and important for our societies. Nobody can say you for sure, that things will be as they were before.
Is this the big transformation that everyone was expecting? Are we ready as a society to deal with this? The world has become a big village, as one must correctly say. The whole world is affected by this, and the whole world will have to get out of this. These were just some general and theoretical thoughts on the issue of the coronavirus. My next article will be the effect on businesses, how it is changing them and what do they have to do to move forward.

4 年I agree with you and Here's what I'd add: Society will be more attentive to what and how decisions that affect them are taken. Crowdsourcing will become more relevant particularly for health related issues and development. The digital journey will be accelerated for creating smart cities, market places, payments, education and health care. Agile culture and working from home will prevail and become even more relevant as we up-pace in tech advancement. People will be more sensitive to qualify of life.

4 年As much as i appreciate with your wishful thinking, i highly doubt that Covid-19 will change the world that much. It seems now that its changing because almost everything is paused but past experiences have proven that human beings forget easily and adapt quickly. If Covid-19 with contribute in re-distribution of wealth, we shall see, but i doubt it... As in every crises, the low and middle class are the most affected ones, generally speaking. Also, the “social media stars” aka rubbish IMO are still continuing to “shine” having even more attention by ppl staying at home all day long. And it will continue like that i believe because we are so much trapped into social media. I wouldnt like social gatherings to stop or being reduced. Traveling, exploring, enjoying your self is not wrong. In my opinion, problems are much more deeper and i believe they start how wealth is distributed among us, what are the politicians and the folk doing to actually built a stable, reliable, fair social and economical system. Cheers!

4 年Many rules and habits will change all around the world, especially health awareness and care. According to some research, I have come across during this time, health insurance ranks in the last in the list ... For our society, car insurance, shopping, telephone ... are more important than a check-up, or self-care. I think we said this even after the earthquake, and again some are dragging their property insurance ... But this time the global 'tragedy' caused by COVID-19 is very serious and it is setting new rules around the world. I fully agree with your argument that resources and income should be better allocated to 'new life'. However, there is still hope. During an online conference hosted by a US pharmaceutical company, some tips were given: Buy refrigerators, warehouses, but without forgetting inventory software and applications for health parameters. #StayHome #BeSafe?

4 年I think the world is physically attacked but this made it possible for all individuals to be Internet users, so everything is online. This would be a great opportunity to release many online ordering products. Which I think would have a great impact on society helping many businesses in our country specifically, also as in many other places in the world. It would be a good idea to think in this regard.
