It’s cool to be kind: 5 ways to make someone’s day

Did you know Feb. 17 is Random Acts of Kindness Day? Of course, I believe every day should be all about kindness – random or otherwise. But I’m delighted someone had the wisdom to create a holiday devoted to being kind. Think about a time when someone unexpectedly gave you a compliment or did something thoughtful for you. Didn’t it feel good?

As I was pondering the big day and ways to surprise loved ones and strangers, I felt my own mood brightening just at the idea of bestowing gifts of kindness. And although the goal of giving isn’t usually to benefit the giver, doing thoughtful things for others definitely feels terrific, too. Neuroscience backs this up: Forbes recently reported that giving generously has positive effects on the ventral striatum, the part of the brain that governs happiness. In addition, it cites research that summarizes generous people have more close friends (3.2 vs. 2.6 for less-generous folks) and they feel closer to their colleagues (78% compared to 62%). In other words, it feels good to do good!

So, how will you recognize Random Acts of Kindness Day? At PwC, we’re kicking off a “Be Kind” challenge to recognize daily acts of kindness through our Well-Being Rewards Program. And here are five of my favorite ideas for spreading some feel-good cheer. I’d love to hear your suggestions too — please share in the comments below.

1. Send healthy snacks to your local hospital or fire department

Frontline workers deserve all the kindness in the world — especially now. I remember the deep gratitude New Yorkers displayed during the early months of the pandemic when, every night at 7 p.m., they stepped out onto their balconies or threw open their windows and made big noises with pots and pans and bells and whistles. What a joyful way to express thanks to doctors, nurses, EMT, firefighters and hospital staff. Show your appreciation by sending some nourishing gratitude their way.?

2. Give compliments

You may have seen a viral video featuring a couple of happy warriors cruising around and bestowing compliments on strangers. Invariably, there are big smiles all around. Try it! Creative kudos are the best, for example: “Your smile lights up a room - keep sharing!” or “That hat totally suits you — way to look amazing today!”?

3. Mow the lawn or shovel the driveway for your neighbor?

When my mother died earlier this year, routine tasks around the house seemed overwhelming — but friends and loved ones took care of the basics so I could focus on my family. Even when a major life event hasn’t occurred, what a treat to find your driveway miraculously cleared or your yard magically tidied up.?

4. Create a playlist for someone?

Imagine your friend or family member’s delight when they open an email or get a text from you with a list of songs curated especially for them — and being able to press play any time they like and listen again and again. Such a pleasure for the music lover in your life.

5. Pick up the tab

Next time you’re out to lunch or dinner (or going through a drive thru), treat a family, couple or solo diner to their meal. Like so many random acts of kindness, this one is best done anonymously. If they don’t know who’s behind the treat, they can’t object — and you can enjoy your generous act of kindness without making it about you.?

And, if all this seems like too much, try simply greeting those around you with a warm smile and friendly hello. Think of all the people who walk by with their heads down. Be the person who gets them to look up and grin. It’s a win, win for you both.

As Random Acts of Kindness Day approaches, remember: The possibilities for sharing kindness are endless, from giving a stranger a heartfelt compliment to giving up your seat on the train. Visit www.pwc.com/sharekindness for inspiration and/or to share how you were kind to others. Together, let’s make Random Acts of Kindness Day everyday and Be Well, Work Well .
