It’s business as usual in Panama

27 June 2022

As the first half of this year draws to a close, we are pleased to see improved efficiencies in husbandry related processes in Panama. Ironically, this is a result of tackling and overcoming the challenges of the pandemic!

?The world experienced unprecedented rules and regulations implemented by local authorities to flatten the curve. Restricted border crossings, social distancing, working from home, masks wearing, vaccinations – all impacted our personal and professional lives to varying degree, not least the Panamanian shipping sector.

?Today, due to higher vaccination rates, if one is fully vaccinated, no PCR test is required to enter the country. This allows for flexibility when planning crew transfer requirements. The collective sigh of relief from all the crewing agencies that we work with can almost be felt when reading through the emails.

?Documentation requirements from the Health Authorities for disembarking crew are not as stringent as they have been in the past two years. This means less pressure on the Captain and the ship’s staff to keep up with temperature monitoring, daily symptom checks, ports of arrival etc. Ship agents can now provide faster and more efficient services to crew members as they no longer need wait hours for Antigen test results, which took a toll on the quality of service.

The requirements to wear face masks when outdoors has also been lifted. Our customers can again, literally, see the work ethic and spirit of the Panamanian people. This gives a renewed face to our country.

Despite all the events that has played out since 2020, one thing remains unchanged - Panama’s strategic location as a bridge between two oceans which serves as an important maritime hub and trade route. This has, and will always be, our most important asset. Added to that, with four direct flights to Europe (Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid and Istanbul) almost every day of the week, using Panama as a point for crew transfers ensures they get the most effective connection to and from their domicile.
