It's BTS' Year: The 2021 American Music Awards
If we all thought last year that BTS' year would be 2020...well we should rethink that concept again! While BTS gained even more stardom after releasing their first all-English language track called "Dynamite", which marked BTS' first #1 Billboard Hot 100 Chart topping song, BTS' ARMY continues to grow after the release of BTS' two other English language tracks, "Butter" and "Permission to Dance". What do all of these songs have in common? They are all about having fun, having positive energy, and getting through the last two years of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
After BTS' trip to New York City in September for their involvement at the United Nations General Assembly and other Korean Culture related promotions, BTS recently landed in LA to begin their activities in-person! Though their main purpose of being in the states is for their upcoming PERMISSION TO DANCE On Stage Concerts in LA, they started off their LA activities with attending the 2021 American Music Awards!
BTS Hit The Red Carpet:
It has been four years since the BTS members hit the American Music Awards (AMA) red carpet! BTS made their debut in America as a group on the AMA red carpet and as performers on the AMA stage in 2017; Where they performed their global hit, "DNA" -- which has racked over 1.3 billion views on YouTube to date.
The BTS members came as there stylish and fashionable selves. As Louis Vuitton's recently appointed Global Ambassadors, they rocked the red carpet with their grey and black suits with loafers and sneakers. From Jimin's highlights to J-Hope's positive energy on the red carpet, each member was acknowledged for their appearance; But it's safe to say that ARMYs (BTS' fandom name) were mostly intrigued by Suga's red hair - a color he had not worn before.
BTS Take The Screen on American Television:
Also, check out some of BTS' interviews on the Red Carpet! From discussing their legendary "Butter" performance in front of ARMYs for the first time to talking about meeting Lizzo at Harry Style's LA concert, there are definitely some unique Bangtan moments during these interviews -- including the members improved speaking abilities in the English language, while answering questions during their interviews.
BTS' Star Studded AMA Performances:
"You are our universe" - Jin of BTS. Like Jin stated during one of their awards speeches, this universe that we all live in has brought us together! From the purple lights to the glowing wristbands, Coldplay and BTS finally had the chance to come together in-person to perform their mega smash hit, "My Universe"! As the crowd of music fans were singing along to ARMYs chanting loudly and proudly for BTS, this start studded collaboration performance was everything this world needed to heal, after facing nearly two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing all of the fans of Coldplay and BTS smiling, nearly coming to tears, and having a great unified time together was a sight for sore eyes.
GET IT. LET IT. ROLL! BTS ended the night as the main performer's for the show with their #1 hit, "Butter". From the all decked out yellow outfits to a HUGE heart that transformed from a yellow heart with the "Butter" logo to a Purple Heart with the BTS ARMY logo was a LEGENDARY performance! What made this their best and most special "Butter" performance so far, was the fact that it was their first and only live performance in front of their fans since the song's release. Now I say best performance SO FAR because they may be performing it during their PERMISSION TO DANCE On Stage Concerts in LA later this week. While their first performance for "Butter" in front of their fans in-person was not with tens of thousands of ARMYs in a stadium like they will have at SoFi, they got to perform it as the main performance on one of the biggest music awards shows in America!
Note: Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, Megan Thee Stallion was unable to attend and perform with BTS for their "Butter" Remix performance. ARMYs have shown Megan Thee Stallion support for her last minute change and continued to support BTS on-stage during their performance for "Butter" at the AMAs.
BTS Makes History at The AMAs:
Smooth like butter. Pull you in like no other. - "Butter". As stated in the lyrics for "Butter", BTS cruised their way into the AMAs by dominating all of the awards they were nominated for! With three nominations, BTS took their first award of the night for Best Pop Duo or Group; This is their third consecutive year winning this award at the AMAs. During the middle of the show, BTS took their second award for Best Pop Song, which is also known as the song of the summer - "Butter". And towards the end of the show, surprisingly to BTS, they took their last and final award for Artist of The Year; Marking themselves as the first Asian and Korean act to win this major award in AMA history.

While RM, the leader and most fluent English speaker out of all the members, usually gives the award speeches, it was amazing to see all the members have time to speak into the mic; Especially, since most of the words spoken were in English! If they can learn English for ARMYs, ARMYs will continue to learn Korean for the members. But from Suga speaking comfortably in Korean on American television to Jungkook saying "smooth like butter" during their award speeches, these are just some of the precious moments that BTS and ARMYs will cherish and remember for a lifetime!
Congratulations to BTS and their well deserved wins at this year's American Music Awards!
Bonus Moments at The AMAs That Made ARMYs Happy:
While seeing BTS rock the red carpet and on-stage were the main events, some bonus moments that caught ARMYs attention included the members reuniting with friends, meeting artists they never met before, and seeing them jam to other performances. Wondering who some of these people were? Let's check it out!
One of the biggest people that ARMYs trended on Twitter alongside trending BTS was popular Latin-American singer, Becky G; Whom collaborated with J-Hope of BTS on the 2018 sampled smash hit, "Chicken Noodle Soup" - which racked up to 313 million views on YouTube. From circulating videos on Twitter of Becky G reuniting with J-Hope with an embracing friendly hug to Becky G calling BTS her "homies" during an interview on the red carpet, there are many more moments from Becky G that caught ARMYs attention. Especially, Becky G styling in a purple dress that reminded ARMYs of the significance of the color purple; Which stems from BTS' member V stating, "I purple you" at a 2016 concert and translates as "I love you" or "‘Borahae’ ???" in Korean. The color purple is a symbol of BTS and ARMYs long lasting love and support for each other.
Some other bonus moments included the BTS members being recognized by trend-setting popular boy bands that started it all back in the day! And by back in the day, that means the 80's and 90's. From BTS meeting with New Kids on The Block to watching the BTS members jam out to New Edition's "If It Isn't Love" performance, this was an all-out boyband night; As BTS took home three awards and performed two songs, all the while New Kids on The Block and New Edition battled it out as Boston natives on-stage with some of their popular tracks. Even Boyz II Men member, Shawn Stockman, showed his support for BTS on the red carpet and in the arena after photobombing his daughter's picture with BTS. Shawn attended BTS' LOVE MYSELF, SPEAK YOURSELF tour back in 2019 and even did a cover song on "Serendipity" by Jimin of BTS on Instagram. It's great seeing boy bands support one another and embrace each other despite the generational differences.
Post-Award Show Tradition - BTS' Celebratory Livestream on V-Live:
After the award show ended, the BTS members took to V-Live to stream their celebrations of winning awards and performing with their beloved fans, ARMY. V-Live is a Korean video live-streaming platform that Korean entertainer's use to communicate with their fans. As a tradition, after every award show, the BTS members go live on V-Live to discuss their experiences at the award show and gratefulness for ARMYs. Sometimes the members even accidentally slip some information on upcoming promotions that have not released any information yet; Some ARMYs took to Twitter translating the conversation between RM, Jin and Suga about the Grammys - stating that RM may have spoiled the surprise that they are definitely on the Grammy nomination list because he said their video will come out. The Grammy Nomination list does not come out until November 23, 2021 PDT.
Subtitles and a replay for the V-Live stream will be posted soon!
BTS Take to Twitter to Share Their Love for ARMY + A Look at The AMAs From BTS POV:
After the BTS members V-Live stream, the members took to Twitter and Weverse to post and share their thoughts with ARMYs on their AMA experience. From the members sharing content of their AMA experience from their POV to thanking ARMYs for cheering them on and watching them perform for the first time in two years, BTS and ARMYs are connected more than ever and appreciate each other even more after not being able to see each other in-person for a long time. It's thanks to platforms like Twitter and YouTube that have sky rocketed BTS to where they are now career-wise. BTS will never forget that factor and will continue to connect with ARMYs in-person and via social media.
BTS has a variety of upcoming promotions coming soon!
