It's been a long time since I wrote a LinkedIn Article. Here's what I've learnt in 2022.

Having a bit of a scout around on LinkedIn as you do, reflecting on another year that's almost over and wondering what next year will bring, I came across some old articles I wrote back when I worked in the assistive tech industry. Funny story how that worked out - some of you know, some don't, but let's just say that from that experience we found out who our friends really were, and learnt some very valuable life lessons along the way.

2022 has been a year of ups and downs for me. In no particular order, I have:

  • Built a brilliant team of people I'd trust with everything - and walked away from them to pursue new opportunities. (Still miss you guys if you're reading, btw)
  • Realised I made a huge mistake with one opportunity and was saved by another coming along at the right time (2022 sure has been big on life lessons!)
  • Watched my kids grow a bit more and turn into the sort of people I know they're capable of being (now i feel really, really old)
  • Decided it might be time to move house, right when the RBA decided I probably should stay put (thanks guys, but let's talk first next time)
  • Applied to go back to University and pursue formal qualifications in HR Management
  • Most recently started a new role that I'm really enjoying and cant wait to get right into (shout out to the team at Serco on the AHSC contract).

So why does any of this matter to anybody else? It probably doesn't. But what does matter is that I take the time to acknowledge these things and every little thing I've learnt and felt and experienced and loved and hated along the way. Because those things are what will shape me for next year - and more importantly - they shape how I behave and interact with others.

Every job I've had has involved working with people - as a manager, coworker, customer, trainer and just about everything else. I have been - and continue to be - the new guy. But that means I know how it feels, and I can relate to and support everybody else who's in that boat.

Sometimes you dont need the glossy post from the motivational speaker. Sometimes you are the motivational speaker. Nobody knows your plans and goals like you do. I hope 2023 is another opportunity for me to tick a couple off, find a few more, fail at some and absolutely knock others out of the park.

Just no more COVID please......
