‘It’s another really good cause’, blah, blah blah…
Look, before I wake the haters and trolls, I’ve no issue with people doing charity work, but surely the focus should be the charity, not the person doing the fund raising? Life’s too busy to worry about someone else’s problems isn’t it?
OK, so this email might not sit well with everyone, but it can’t just be me that gets bombarded with these charitable requests all the time? It’s great that you want to do a night walk, or something suitably non-exerting. I couldn’t care less that you’re too fat to swim 100 metres and that,,...
“1,000 metres is going to be a real challenge”.
How about you put your hand in your own pocket and pay for that “fundraising skydive” yourself?
No doubt your Facebook and emails are also awash with do-gooders claiming to want raise money for a “really good cause”, but I thought I’d take action and do a little bit of research myself.
Take the Link Visiting Scheme - They aim to befriend and support anyone isolated or lonely who would benefit from receiving a regular visitor. Whilst the majority of those visited are older people there are no age restrictions so I figured I’d go check them out, especially as they’re based in Wokingham, Berkshire, like me.
Marji was keen to get away from the desk and office admin, so accepted my offer of coffee and a chat. We met at Café Nero in Wokingham where I had a millionaire’s shortbread that was very nearly as nice as she was!
Turns out that Marji is just the sort of person to ask for a charitable contribution, send you an email or rattle a tin, but over a coffee I learned so much more. I learned who she was, what made her tick and how she’s helped my local community creating an awesome charity from which hundreds benefit.
So much in fact, I signed up to be a volunteer.
Ifs and buts:
IF you’re local to Wokingham you need to know about The Link Visiting Scheme and charity.
IF you’re bored, but had time to read this, why not click the link and chuck them a few quid?
IF I’ve sponsored you, sponsor me!
BUT wouldn’t it be nice if everyone shared this post and everyone added a few quid?
P.S. Feel free to feel guilty about me sponsoring you in the past – time to return the favour!
P.P.S - Meet Marjie Walker (bottom left): she the is the lady who said “yes” to a chat and “no“ to a piece of cake!
