It's Always Something

In August of this year I was diagnosed with brain cancer. My first thought was “It’s always something, my mother used to say that when I was a kid, and I guess when you get older you realize that mom was right. This was one of the challenges that I had not expected.
When my brother Rick was diagnosed with the same prognosis it was fifteen years ago. I remember how helpless I felt because there wasn’t anything that could help him get better. Your family is everything and your friends are too when your going through something like this.
I decided to learn from what was happening to me. Rather than, bitch and moan about it and it has made all the difference in the world. It frees you up and fills you with compassion…and you know I’m not a saint but I think that for me it’s a best way to handle thing because I love to help people.
Through this time I’ve learned the following things:
- I’ve learned to be much more patient because I only have use of my left side. I’ve learned how to be ambidextrous
- I’ve learned to laugh at myself, its important that you don’t take yourself seriously
- I’ve learned to be more patient with other people
- I’ve learned that things I took for granted have new meaning now
- I’ve learned that my husband is the greatest love of my life.
- I’ve learned that women can put a bra on and a necklace and earrings and do this in twenty seconds
When my mother said it’s always something, she may have not meant the experience that I’m going through now, but it is always something and I believe that you can learn from every experience. So be prepared to open your heart and your mind cause good things always happen even if its sounds like bad stuff in the beginning.

9 年Jan - we had a great lunch last fall and you provided guidance and humor and offered your personal resources. You left a lasting memory and there are only a few to do that. You said "when outside business thinks of Chicago I want them to think of me"....I will continue to hit you for biz from my clients. Best wishes and thoughts my friend.

9 年Jan: Thank you for being so brave, so resilient and so willing to share. "It's Always Something" reminds me that, on this planet, "Nobody Gets A Free Ride." The key is to look for and appreciate the blessings that come through adversity.
