It's Not All About You

It's Not All About You

No matter how many I've viewed, I'm still amazed at how many LinkedIn profiles sound like carnival barkers.

Award after award...Talent on top of talent... Fantastic accomplishments piled high.

But there’s one glaring omission: WHO are they talking to?

So many profiles leave me wondering, Who is this person selling to? Who do they help, and how?

Instead, they sound like the Swiss Army Knife of LinkedIn — able to do everything for who knows who.

Here’s the thing: You’re not an item in a catalog. Prospective clients or employers don’t care about every shiny feature. They care about how you can solve their problems.

So, flip the script.

?? Be clear about your audience. Who are you serving? Spell it out. ?? Speak to their needs, not your amazingness.

Your profile should answer the question: What’s in it for them?

Start strong. Your banner and headline should capture attention and show you’re the solution your audience needs.

For example, if you’re focused on AI for small technology companies, your banner might say: “Helping Small Tech Companies Adopt AI to Drive Growth and Profitability” ??

In just a few words, you tell your audience who you serve and how you help them. No guessing. No confusion. No wondering what the heck you do.

By emphasizing your audience, you transform your profile from a self-congratulatory resume to a powerful tool that resonates, connects, and converts.

Let’s leave the Swiss Army Knife approach in the woods.

Be specific, be clear, and most importantly, be audience-focused.

What’s one thing you could change in your profile today to make it more about your audience? Share in the comments.

If you want to brand or position yourself more effectively, I’d love to offer you a complimentary Power Positioning Call. Let’s take the first step in crafting a compelling narrative for your brand. Schedule your call here.

LinkedIn profiles should be less about self-promotion and more about connecting with the audience they serve. Shifting the focus to value and relevance can make all the difference, Wendy Marx. ???
