It's all about Who Ya Know! ??

It's all about Who Ya Know! ??

In episode 308 of The Who Ya Know Job Networking Show, we invite Mike Mehterian, Joelle Frye & Paul Hagerty.

Joelle Frye is an Executive Operations & Customer Excellence Leader who helps to optimize her clients' processes, performance and potential. She is passionate about creating value add differentiation which drives employee/customer satisfaction & loyalty.?

On the show, Joelle talks about her job search during the pandemic. She says, "I separated from my company at the end of January of this year. So, it was recent. I was incredibly burned out and needed a minute. So I gave myself permission, which we all need to do. I took the Olympics off and started to try to get rolling in earnest, mid-February I guess."

She talks about the lessons from her previous job. According to her, "The job had initially a set trajectory of what we expected it to be, what it was supposed to be. And after x period of time, it was kind of going in a different direction. So, what I needed to do for myself was listen to what my body and my mind were telling me. It was not where I needed to be. So, what I have learned is in going through the progressions of job searches historically, it was always with an 'I just have to get something.' I have to learn that less is more."

Joelle also talks about landing her job and how it happened. She says, "Interestingly, I was commenting and posting on LinkedIn as we were told kind of to do. And I was commenting on some posts from a former employee. Because the presence is important. So I had someone from a company that I had previously worked for? reach out to me on LinkedIn and she basically said, 'Are you available?' And I'm like absolutely."

Paul Hagerty is an HR professional who started his consulting company 6 years ago but due to covid was unemployed for a long time. He has recently landed with VCFO and says the WYK Show has been a gift that supported his search and always lifted him up!

Paul talks about his career in consulting. He says, "I started in 2016. I was in Philadelphia up in that market and one of my contacts brought me down to Texas. That's how I ended up here. And when that contract ended or previously that I had met a woman. So I ended up staying in Texas. But my contact ended. My network was back up in Philadelphia. So I had to re-establish a network and figure out who was hiring for whom and all those things and then I turned into programs like Who Ya Know and it helped me do a little bit better job of getting noticed and ended up with me landing at VCFO, just recently."

Talking about his transition from consulting to full-time, Paul says, "My consulting business was me myself and I. So it was a department of one. I'm very lucky to have made this transition because I found the right place in VCFO. They hire consultants. For me, I'm a part of a team now. I have resources. I have people who I can commiserate with or celebrate with and bounce ideas off. So, that transition is been very smooth and very easy."

Paul also talks about the hard part of the job search before his successful landing. According to him, "I had no cash flow. I had some money in the savings but that's where I had to tap and keep tapping and tapping and tapping. I hurt. I watched it go down, down, down, down, down. And now it's going back, back, back, back, back."

Paul shares some tips and tricks for developing a new network after relocation. He says, "What I did first was I started with my network back in Philly. 'Hey, I'm in Texas, I'm staying. Who you know?' So I made some instant connections there. And then decided to join some associations that do what I do. I wanted a position where I could flourish and be happy again. So that built upon itself and then I went out to other groups. I started in a small radius and built out a little bit."

About his mental and physical health during his job search, Paul says, "Physically, I stopped exercising. I was just frustrated. I didn't want to do it. And ate probably all the wrong things. They tasted really good so I ate them. So my health wasn't really the main concern.? And the other thing was I? just met a woman and we eventually got married. And I felt like I couldn't provide. She has got a very good job and does very well but I felt that I wasn't able to contribute."

Talking about using video messages in recruitment procedures, Paul says, "I would follow up on the interview and in some cases, it was two people in one interview so I put both their names on the little whiteboard and just sent them to both their emails. That's where I heard that it was shared with other people within the organization."

Mike Mehterian is an IT Service Delivery Manager who says his life was transformed by attending the WYK Career Transition Summit in June of 2020. Results since attending the summit:?

  • Landed employment?
  • 2.5 Million Views on LinkedIn?

On the show, Mike talks about breaking out of his shell after attending the Career Transition Summit. He says, "Before the summit, I was the world's best-kept secret. And when you're going through a job search and you're trying to define the next gig, the worst thing you want to be is the best-kept secret. I went from spraying and praying to being focused like a laser beam and I turned into a job-seeking sniper."

Mike also shares his story of getting connected with the Who Ya Know Show. He says, "The first thing I did was I went through all of my contacts on LinkedIn. I looked for people who were hiring managers but most importantly I was looking for HR and recruiter types that I had built connections with in the past. And then what I did was I? sent them DMs. They were very friendly. Even if they had nothing, they were willing to help. So one of them pointed me to you. Then I signed up for the Career Transition Summit."

Talking about the 'evergreen strategy,' Mike says, "You make one video. It doesn't matter what the season is, it will work. and it's always appropriate. So for new connections, I did a 25-second video introducing myself, thanking them for the connection, and looking forward to the opportunities for future networking down the road."

Mike also talks about engagement pods and how to use them. According to him, "It's a group of people who gather together. All of us post content. All of us engage in that content. One of the things that are most important about a LinkedIn post is the golden hour. That's the first hour that the content gets posted. It is that hour that decides whether it is going to go viral or whether it's just gonna go to the LinkedIn black hole."

Mike also shares his opinion on ATS. He says, "It's been going on for a long time. They have their whole hopes and things and to them, it's an investment. And the companies especially who shell out thousands of dollars to put that into place and it's the most ridiculous piece of software in the world. The best way to beat the ATS is not to go in it."

?? Paul at 34:02 - The pain was worth the gain.

?? Paul at 38:45 - I? just met a woman and we eventually got married. And April 2nd is our anniversary.

?? Paul at 39:38 - I’m not what I do.

?? Mike at 48:05 - It takes your job search from 2D to 3D.

?? Paul at 49:54 - You got me to do it. I did it and it works.

?? Mike at 55:55 - It was a life changing experience that I had to go from being an introvert to an extrovert which made the difference.?

?? Mike at 57:28 - I went from spraying and praying to being focused like a laser beam and I turned into the job seeking sniper.

?? Mike at 01:02:48 - I go out and I engage in other people's content. So having the pod makes it easy because everyone is right there. If people post at 7 am, 8 am and I’m doing it at 9 am, I get two hours of material. I can go back there and start priming the pump which helps them.?

?? Mike at 01:04:37 - What started it was me commenting on a recruiter post, just going through my feed and whatever I engaged in. And this particular recruiter posted something like, ‘Oh take it easy on us. We have it hard.’ And it’s like, no I’m throwing a flag on this one.

?? Mike at 01:08:10 - At the end of it, I didn't need the ATS.

?? Mike at 01:08:18 - The best way to beat the ATS is not go in it.
