It's all about people... meet NHG's Ville Holopainen

Tell us a little bit about yourself, Ville

Besides being a digital transformation consultant, I am also a healthcare professional with 10 years of work experience as a paramedic and field commander. After working in the field for several years, I complemented my education as a registered nurse with a master’s in healthcare management. My consulting career in digital transformations started as trainee at Salivirta & Partners and later as a solution consultant at TietoEvry. Among other things, I was working on major changes in main releases building up a new way to make new release implementations. To work more holistically on different projects and software, I returned to Salivirta & Partners, which was acquired by NHG in 2021.

What’s your ‘why’?

The main thing for me is the people and the communications between them. I like to see things from a communication and connecting perspective. I would like to describe my role as a person who always tries to look at things broadly by stepping back and not getting too caught up in the day-to-day. This enables me to respect the complexity and see where things could be simplified and, on the other hand, where we must be careful not to simplify things too much. Often, we build up the problems, but sometimes small changes have the biggest impact. For me, it’s about the sense of having an open mind, and building relationships and trust.

What’s the biggest challenge we face in health and social care today?

This is a hard one. The population pyramid, here in Finland the struggle with the delayed reform, and especially the difficulty to hire and retain healthcare professionals are complex issues that need to be addressed piece by piece. There is a lot that can be done, for example, we need BI and knowledge management to really understand these issues and to see where to focus. ?

How are you rethinking healthcare in your day-to-day work?

My role in projects is often to be the driver and connector. We have brilliant people at NHG, and if I can be the one taking one step back and seeing what needs to be done, and make sure the problems get solved by the best applicable specialist, then I have succeeded. I connect people and act as facilitator between them to enable knowledge sharing and finding the right people needed to solve the issues at hand.
