It's All About Opportunity

WorkingNation Welcomes Our New Media Partner

Let’s start with some exciting news. WorkingNation has just announced a new partnership with Scripps News Network.

Together, we’ll be sharing our original WorkingNation articles and videos on the changing nature of work, the workforce opportunities being created, and what workers and job seekers can do to find and thrive in family-sustaining careers. We’ll also be creating new stories that will air during Scripps’ Morning Rush, Main & Wall, and Scripps News Tonight programs.

“Employment stands as a fundamental cornerstone of our society, and the collaboration between WorkingNation and Scripps will provide deeper insights and comprehension,” says our founder and CEO Art Bilger.

The announcement is part of an expansion of Scripps News coverage with several other news partners.

“Scripps News offers depth and variety, and each of these partner brands are leaders in coverage in their sectors,” says Brian Donlon, senior director of live news for Scripps News. He adds, “The addition of these partnerships with allow Scripps News to enrich our linear and digital coverage of the issues impacting the everyday lives of Americans – from the economy and politics, to travel and sports.”

We can't wait to share our extensive storytelling with a new audience.

Where the Jobs Are in 2024

If you’re new to WorkingNation, our storytelling mission is reporting on where the biggest job opportunities are in today’s economy and how to get the skills needed to be a part of that workforce.

Health care, cybersecurity, AI, construction, advanced manufacturing, and the green sector are all in-demand fields. Employers continue to tell us that they are looking for workers in these fields but, in some cases, they are having a hard time finding people with the right skills.

There are initiatives, programs, and people addressing the challenge. Here are some of our recent stories about the big opportunities and big solutions to the skills gap.

Head to our website at www.workingnation.org for more articles, videos, and podcasts.

Joan Lynch, our chief content and programming officer, also talked about where the jobs are in 2024 when she guested on the Jazzed About Work Podcast.

WorkingNation Overheard

Since the beginning of the year, we’ve already taken our signature interview series WorkingNation Overheard to Las Vegas for the big CES tech conference in January and to Austin for SXSW EDU last week.

At CES, we got a first-hand look at some of the new technology shaping the way we do our jobs and spoke with employers and workforce leaders on what they’re seeing on the horizon.

For the past four years, WorkingNation has proudly partnered with SXSW EDU, the annual conference at the center of education and career pathways. This year, we set up on the Expo Hall floor, where we were joined by dozens of innovators in the space who shared their thoughts on postsecondary education and its role in career prep, K-12 career exploration, AI, apprenticeships, and more.

Climate-Resilient Jobs

WorkingNation continues to report on the opportunity around efforts to prepare for, recover from, and adapt to climate change. This is creating jobs. Late last year, we produced the digital magazine Climate and Career with our partners at JFF, Ares Charitable Foundation, and WRI to take a deeper dive into the subject.

Inside you will learn more about the millions of jobs being created here in the U.S. and find out how their CREST initiative is helping equip workers and learners with the skills they will need in the green economy.

As part of that reporting, WorkingNation senior policy advisor Jane Oates and I traveled with the partners to Mumbai, India to see the global connection to the green jobs movement here in the U.S. and to learn how the employers are tackling the issue there.

My takeaway was that in India there is a small but dedicated movement to “go green” and a lot of it is taking place in MSMEs – micro, small, and medium enterprises. Jane and I agree that visiting a small working factory – getting to interact with the leadership and the workers – was the highlight.

As I write this, I’m in Miami Beach for Aspen Ideas: Climate conference to hear how business leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and scientists are addressing climate change and how that is creating job and career opportunities around the country. I'll be sharing what I learn in the coming days and weeks on our website and our social platforms.

Coming Soon

Our video team lead by executive producer Melissa Panzer has been on the road, as well. They have an exciting line-up of videos on the schedule over the next few weeks, including the story of the tough choice some workers face when they choose to disclose their disability to their employers, told through three co-workers who made that decision. Watch for that video later this week.

The team was also in Minneapolis to look at a program that is integrating digital literacy into training for automotive repair jobs. As we’ve been saying, tech plays a role in nearly every job now. Auto repair is no exception. We’ll keep you updated on when you can watch that one.
