It’s All in How We Present it

It’s All in How We Present it

When we want to give feedback to someone there are lots of skills required depending on the circumstances. That said, there are two quick models that you can use as skeletons, frameworks for the conversation. The first one is the FORMS Method and the other is the S.B.I. Model. To learn how to understand and use these quickly just follow on with this. FORMS stands for Factual, Observable, Reliable, Measurable and Specific.

If you are going to have a conversation with someone whereby you are going to be giving them feedback, covering these components of the dialogue are crucial.

The other model to use is the S.B.I. This acronym stands for Situation – Behavior – Impact. So it would sound like, “When (Situation) happens and you do (Behavior) this is how it impacts me/you/team/organization.”

Think about a conversation you have coming up with someone that did something you have to address. How could you apply or consider each of these to determine which would be more helpful when you have the difficult conversation?

While these are not the only two models for providing feedback, each of these will offer you some guidance when having to deliver a tough message that people may not want to hear. Consider how much more effective the feedback you receive from your supervisors if they put it in this language.

Have a great week! All my best to you!
