Hidden Details: the beauty of invisible detailing

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

One of the beauties of glass is its transparency. The clear nature of the material naturally draws the eye out, focusing on landscapes, views and materials. When architectural glazing is detailed properly, the glass merges seamlessly into the structure, allowing you to focus the design on the materials and external visage rather than frames.?

Structural glass connections?

Structural glazing is the most minimal and effective way to create a fixed element of glazing for the best impact.?All fixing details for structural glass are designed to be hidden within the building finishes, creating wall to wall elevations of glass with no fixing on show.?

Obviously, these must be designed for each project. But if done correctly, you can create a glass structure that sits perfectly within the building design.?

Old Quay

Richard Downer, Architect

As part of a new build home in Devon, IQ detailed this bespoke frameless window that sits within the hallway at Old Quay. The design intent was to allow the rough natural stone wall to become the focal point, creating a triple glazed window that merged into the wall.?

Frameless Glass Door Connections?

Similar to structural glazing, the fixed frame of sliding doors can be hidden within the building finishes, creating a frameless design. This allows the creation of wall to wall and floor to ceiling glass installations with no visible framing.?

The only frame visible for minimal sliding glass door installations is the interlocker of the sliding pane. This slim sightline - measuring 20-26mm depending on the system - allows for the visual merging of internal and external spaces.?

But what if you want to hide this frame too??

Careful planning and consideration of the glazing design within the existing or planned structure can allow you to hide this framing within the building too. See below for some examples.?

Coolington Barns?

The sliding doors on this barn conversion were designed to sit framelessly behind the brick pillars. The sliding doors sit within the brick pillar structure, creating a frameless design. The barn renovation looks the same whether the doors are open or closed, allowing the viewer to appreciate the traditional design of the brick structure with no compromise.?

?Brook Barn

The integrated design of the timber pillars and sliding doors makes it seem as if the glass wall doesn't exist. The sliding door interlocks were designed using global alignment to sit directly behind the timber structures. Mirrored cladding to hide the roof structure extenuates this design.?
