ITAMOps as a practise

In many fields of IT we see Ops teams emerge. Think about DevOps, SecOps, MLOps and FinOps. Isn’t it time to discuss the ITAMOps team?

ITAMOps, fully written out as ITAM Operations, should focus on everyday tasks to keep the show on the road. Maintaining records of license entitlements, monitoring tool coverage, and reviewing policies, processes, and work instructions.

While these tasks are vital for the health of ITAM in an organization, they focus on something other than improvements, adoption, and influence. The ITAM team should be responsible for these topics. The positioning of the ITAM team and the ITAMOps team can be quite different. While the ITAM team can be positioned reporting to CIO/CFO/CPO, the ITAMOps team can be positioned under the IT Manager for instance.

This is in line with what I have always advised my customers, work with a firefighter team for the everyday tasks and have another team work on the tactical and strategic goals. Without splitting this work, the team will drown in operational work without having time to focus on the tactical and strategic tasks.
