International Construction Company Salini Impregilo has issued a Press Release that confirms what was announced by Italian Infrastructure and Transport Minister Graziano Delrio: work on the first section of the High Speed Railway line that will link Verona to Padua will start before the end of the year.
The design and build contract for the 44.2 km long Verona - Vicenza section has been awarded to the IRI Consorzio Alta Velocità (IRICAV) Due consortium, to which Salini Impregilo belongs together with Fintecna, Ansaldo STS, Lamaro Appalti, Astaldi and Società Italiana per Condotte d’Acqua.
The project will quadruple the Verona - Padua line and will also relocate the old existing line where the two tracks are too close to each other.
Announcements regarding the two remaining phases, crossing Vicenza and connecting Vicenza to Padua are expected by the end of 2016.
The 76.5 km long Verona-Padua segment is part of major infrastructure planning at both Italian and European level, forming an integral part of the Turin-Milan-Venice line and being an important component of the Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network. The 29 km long segment between Padua and Venice was opened in 2007.
