Italians steal the show
The development of offshore energy is now a global thing and we are seeing projects and activities all over the world. With the summer vacation season coming to an end, developers and companies are slowly getting into work mode and we are hoping to soon witness increasing offshore activity and exciting announcements. In the week behind us, Italians did not waste any time and they took all the spotlight in Europe, but also a bit farther away.
Italian transmission system operator (TSO)?Terna has put into operation a project said to be of fundamental importance for the country’s entire electricity system.
The project is a €90 million undersea cable that connects the island of Elba with Italy’s mainland, doubling the connection lines between the electricity system and the grid on the island.
Prysmian’s cable-laying vessel (CLV) Leonardo Da Vinci laid the undersea cable.
Speaking about Prysmian, the Milan-headquartered cabling giant secured a contract with Terna Rete Italia for the Adriatic Link project that will connect the central-southern and central-northern areas of Italy.
“We are proud to have the opportunity to play our role in the development of such a strategic infrastructure for our country, by making available the best “Made in Italy”?submarine cable technology," said H. Ozmen, EVP Projects BU at Prysmian.?
Prysmian also completed?the installation and HV testing activities of?its submarine and land power cables for the Viking Link interconnector connecting the UK and Denmark.?
All cables were manufactured at the company's center of excellence in Arco Felice and CLVs Leonardo da Vinci and Cable Enterprise conducted the work.
“We are committed to supporting countries in achieving their sustainability goals and we are proud of our long-standing relationship with National Grid and Energinet that will help the UK and Denmark to significantly reduce their carbon emissions,” Ozmen noted.
Going above the borders of Europe, the company also signed a capacity reservation agreement with Marinus Link, a subsidiary of the Australian TSO TasNetworks, to reserve the capability to deliver a power interconnector project in Australia.
Australia is said to represent a major market for Prysmian, with a number of projects under development.
Last but not least, Italian oilfield services provider?Saipem won two new contracts for offshore activities in C?te d’Ivoire and Italy for an overall amount of €850 million.
