Italian Comfort with a Twist: Baked Ziti

Italian Comfort with a Twist: Baked Ziti

Signore e signori, potreste prestarmi attenzione, per favore? è ora di parlare di pranzo!

Baked ziti is one of my all-time favorites – a timeless Italian dish that brings everyone together around the table. Throw in some spicy Italian sausage, and Mama mia, it’s a feast! Perfect for Fun Lunch Friday, it hits just right with a balance of comfort and celebration, a welcoming vibe that’s perfect for the end of the week. Easy to prep in advance, baked ziti means less time selecting and more time savoring the moment. It’s no wonder why Italian food elevates everyone’s mood! Mangiare!

Ingredients:

For the Baked Ziti:

  • 1 cup ziti pasta
  • 1 small chicken breast, cooked and cubed
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1/2 cup fresh mozzarella, cubed
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil, for drizzling

For the Garlic Breadsticks:

  • 2 breadsticks (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp salted butter, melted
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Pasta Ahead of Time Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook the ziti until just al dente (8-10 minutes). Drain, toss with a light drizzle of olive oil to prevent sticking, and set aside to cool. Letting it rest for at least 20 minutes (or even a few hours if prepping early) will enhance its ability to absorb the sauce.
  2. Prepare the Chicken If the chicken isn’t cooked, season it with salt, garlic and pepper, then cook in a skillet over medium heat with a touch of olive oil until fully cooked, about 6-8 minutes. Cube it once cooled.
  3. Assemble the Ziti In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta, marinara sauce, cubed chicken, half of the fresh mozzarella, and half of the Parmesan. Season with salt and pepper, and mix well.
  4. Let it Rest Again (if time allows) For an extra flavor boost, cover and let the ziti mixture rest in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour. This gives the pasta even more time to soak up the sauce.
  5. Bake Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the mixture to a small baking dish, top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan, and drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Prepare the Garlic Breadsticks While the ziti bakes, melt the butter and stir in the minced garlic. Brush over the breadsticks and sprinkle with chopped parsley. Toast in the oven for the last 5 minutes of baking for the best texture and flavor.
  7. Rest Before Serving Once out of the oven, let the baked ziti sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. This final rest helps set the dish, making it even tastier with each bite.?

Chef's Note:

Giving your ziti added resting time at each stage allows the flavors to meld. This dish is perfect for a leisurely Friday lunch that’s easy to prep ahead.

Want maximum flavor pop? Prepare this, cool to room temp, and refrigerate for 48 hours. NEVER microwave. Heat in a skillet or small pot.
