In 2023, the Italian cheese sector achieved a remarkable €13 billion turnover, outperforming inflation and escalating raw material costs. Fueled by an 8.4% surge in exports, the industry demonstrated resilience amid challenges, such as a 20% higher milk price compared to the EU average, as reported by Assolatte.
The positive performance, especially in exports, compensated for a domestic consumption slowdown. The European market outshone overseas territories, mitigating setbacks in Asian markets due to unfavorable exchange rates.
While overall milk production remained stable at 13 million tonnes, Italy's cheese production, surpassing 1.2 million tonnes (up 1% from 2022), proved instrumental. Noteworthy DOP cheeses, including Gorgonzola (+3%), Grana Padano (+5%), and Pecorino Romano (+10%), marked a resurgence in 2023.
Domestically, inflation impacted consumption, with lactose-free products, burrata, and fermented milks showing promise. Fresh and spreadable cheeses dominated volume sales, with Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano contributing over 30% to the sector's turnover, despite representing 19% in volume.

Foreign markets played a pivotal role in the industry's recovery, with an estimated €5 billion turnover in 2023. Notably, Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano experienced growth, while mozzarella led as the most exported cheese (25% of total volumes).
Assolatte highlighted the achievements despite high production costs, with the average value of dairy exports growing by 8.4%. The farm gate milk price in Italy, 20% higher than 2021, impacted competitiveness compared to Germany and the Netherlands.
Assolatte President Paolo Zanetti expressed satisfaction, noting the industry's resilience and international growth, with the EU-to-non-EU turnover ratio shifting from 70-30 in 2003 to 60-40 in 2023.
