The harsh truth is that every viewer will see your portfolio with a different eye. A peer would see all the styles that you can do, an employer will see whether you can do the kind of work that they want. A client would want to see industry specific works. So it's important to know who you are making the portfolio for. If it's for clients, try adding corporate projects that you worked on. If it's a personal showcase, try adding the best of personal projects that you want people to know about. If its just an update for all, make it dynamic by adding the corporate and personal projects.

I believe a story in a showreel limits the amount of work that you can put in. If you are willing to add a story or a narrative, make sure you have relevant kinds of projects that advance your story and do not break the narrative. Or else create a story and a showreel as a separate project in itself not a compilation of works.

Your portfolio is not a static document. It is a dynamic and evolving representation of your work and your growth as a motion designer. 5 Be selective

Cut it short. No matter how much you love a piece of work that you created, if it's not relevant, cut it out. Be brutal about the messaging, duration and visuals that you want to keep. It is a tough task but that's what the game is about, to show only the best and relevant.
