IT4Everyone: A Project to Enhance IT Literacy for People with Hearing Impairments

The IT4Everyone -IT-навыки для слабослышащих людей project has been launched in Uzbekistan with the objective of addressing the accessibility of IT education for individuals with hearing impairments. This initiative is being implemented by the IT Academy, in collaboration with the Society?of the?Deaf?of?Uzbekistan, the Kyrgyz Society of the Blind and Deaf, the Almaty Branch of the Kazakhstan Deaf Society, and with the support of the USAID Entrepreneurship and Business Environment Development Project.

The IT4Everyone platform offers adapted video courses in sign language, tests, and coursework assessments by moderators. The primary goal of the project is to provide deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals with the opportunity to acquire sought-after IT professions at no cost, as well as to learn strategies for promoting businesses online and via social media. ?

This project focuses on enhancing access to information, education, and employment opportunities for people with special needs across Central Asia. Participants who successfully pass the tests and complete their coursework will receive certificates validating their acquired competencies. ?

Initially launched in the spring of this year as a pilot project, IT4Everyone received 148 applications from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan during its first phase. Following a selection process, 115 participants were chosen to undergo training. The top 25 graduates advanced to the second stage, which included visits to IT companies and intensive training camps. The forthcoming phase will offer paid internships with prospects for employment.

The program has already demonstrated its significance and high demand among individuals with hearing impairments and is now accessible to all through the IT4Everyone online platform (it4everyone.uz), offering adapted video lessons, testing, and coursework, with successful participants receiving certificates upon completion.

This project provides a unique opportunity for individuals with hearing impairments in Uzbekistan to achieve both social and professional advancement. Enhancing digital literacy among people with special needs will enable them to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic development, as well as strengthen Uzbekistan’s inclusive and innovative ecosystem, making it more accessible and competitive on the international stage.
