IT Is Not IT

When you start a new IT project or join a new company as an IT executive, the worst thing you can do is tell everyone how you did it in your last project or job. No one wants to hear that, even if you were successful.

No, not every company is the same, which means IT isn't the same. This is particularly important if you love to jump on the latest hype which you "know" will be great. No one wants to hear that either.

So what should you do in a new company or on a new project to ensure the best IT?

Listen

As an executive you always want to know what is really going on and where the problems lie. This is even more important when you start on a project or in a company. If you don't get the real picture, how will you be able to do anything worth while?

Talk to the leaders, talk to the teams, talk to the employees and just listen.

Learn

Your job as an IT executive or project manager is not just to implement IT, but it is to do so for the sake of the company. To do that you need to learn as much as you can about the company, its industry, its history, its products, and its values. Once that is done, you need to learn as much as possible about the IT setup, architecture, security, budget, team setup, and the like.

Leverage

Your years of experience and knowledge around all things IT will be best used if you balance what you know against what the company actually needs. You probably do have skills that the company is lacking, but you always need to take the current situation and strategy into account when proposing changes in IT.?

Is there a way to clean up the IT architecture?

Have you found some flaws in IT security?

Do you need to move or redeploy resources?

Is the HQ vs. local setup ideal?

Can you learn something from what the company is already doing??

Remember to take the time to become a part of your new project or company rather than just jumping in ready to tell them what they've been doing wrong.
