Issue No.11 On limiting beliefs

Recently, I was reviewing the journal where I took notes about all the coaching sessions I've had so far and I noticed a pattern concerning the main obstacle people have in achieving their objectives. Can you guess what's the one thing that consistently holds people back from reaching their goals? Limiting beliefs.

Now, I'm not talking about the kind of beliefs that keep you safe and sane, like "I probably shouldn't jump off this cliff." I'm talking about the ones that make you doubt yourself and your abilities. The ones that say, "I can't do this," or "I'm not good enough."

These beliefs are like little gremlins in your mind, constantly chattering away and sabotaging your efforts. They make you second-guess yourself, hesitate, and ultimately give up before you even try.

But here's the thing: these beliefs are all in your head. They're not based on fact or reality. They're just stories you've been telling yourself for so long that you've started to believe them.

So, how do you overcome them? Well, the first step is to recognize them for what they are: limiting beliefs. Once you can identify them, you can start to challenge them.

  • Ask yourself: is this belief really true? Is there any evidence to support it? More often than not, you'll find that the answer is no.
  • Then, start to reframe your thinking. Instead of "I can't do this," try "I haven't done this yet, but I'm willing to learn." Instead of "I'm not good enough," try "I have strengths and weaknesses, and I'm working on improving."
  • Finally, surround yourself with people who believe in you and support your goals. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in helping you overcome those pesky limiting beliefs.

So, my message to you is this: don't let those little gremlins hold you back. Challenge your beliefs, reframe your thinking, and go after your goals with everything you've got.
