Issue 7 - Our House.
Accessible Marketplace
Accessible & inclusive pop-up retail event coming to centre:mk Milton Keynes on 13th & 14th June! By IMatter CIC
We want Disability Expo to represent the lived experiences and needs of disabled people from across the United Kingdom. To achieve this we are putting together an event that comprises different zones that all come together to offer the best possible location for collaborative working and a showcase of products right where potential customers are.
Our team has been working hard to design and create a bespoke house right in the middle of our event where people can see what products and goods might look like in their homes. This space is being developed so that businesses cannot just talk about what they offer but how they do it and the benefits they have for customers.
Do you provide off-the-shelf products or specialist equipment that can offer independence and assist with daily living? Reach out to us to talk about how to get involved in our Manage@Home independent living house and showcase your solutions in a realistic home environment.

With local councils require housebuilders to ensure a percentage of homes meet a high standard of accessibility. Such as ensuring bathrooms and kitchens have adequate space for wheelchair users. However, information published in the same BBC report highlighted that in response to an?FOI request?showed that cities such as Coventry, Sheffield and Bradford. It was shown that after the FOI request, Coventry implemented an “optional requirement†which applies to some affordable homes.

Are you a housing developer? Here are our top tips on how to ensure your housing offer is accessible:
- Design:?When designing for accessible housing, make sure to include features such as ramps, elevators, and wide doorways to accommodate mobility devices.
- Future proofing:?Don't forget to check that your designs include or give space to allow for accessible bathroom features, such as grab bars and roll-in showers, to ensure safety and independence to be installed at a later date.
- Ask questions:?Have you considered design buildings with automatic door openers and accessible parking spots to make entering and exiting the building easier?
- Location, Location, Location:?Consider the location of the housing, as being close to public transportation, grocery stores, and other necessary amenities can greatly improve accessibility.
- Technology:??Does your housing incorporate or have space for assistive technology, such as visual doorbells or voice-controlled lighting, to make daily tasks easier?
