Time to Lead panel session: Should the building industry regulate itself?

Building safety has been placed front and centre of the agenda, and it’s vital that we collectively get it right.

We wanted to explore whether the industry can, and should, regulate itself in regards to the stricter regime of responsibility and accountability that the Building Safety Act is bringing in.

We asked some of the leading voices from architecture, legal consultancy, housing, health and safety and fire engineering who should be leading the change. They debated whether there are better ways of regulating the industry to ensure the delivery of safe buildings.

The Building Safety Act's second staircase consultation: the easy way out for politicians as well as residents?

Making second staircases mandatory in higher risk residential buildings has been a big talking point this year, with strong arguments for and against. But, as our Director of Fire Safety Adam Eaton reminds us, we mustn't be enticed into a knee-jerk reaction.

While another staircase is a tangible, physical thing, we need to remember that fire safety covers a number of measures that are all equally important, even if some are more visible than others.

Adam makes a compelling argument for evidence-based decision making when it comes to regulatory change.
