Cobalt Institute
Global trade association promoting the sustainable and responsible use of cobalt in all forms
Director General Dinah McLeod shares the Cobalt Institute’s plans for a busy autumn period, including the launch of a landmark industry report that will underscore cobalt’s critical role in the global energy transition.
Dear colleagues,
I hope you’ve had a good summer and are feeling refreshed as we head into an exciting and busy autumn season. The Cobalt Institute team is looking forward to a full agenda packed with events, launches and opportunities to shape the future of our industry, and I’d like to share a few highlights.
Firstly, our Q2 Market Report is out, offering insights into recent market trends, including:
As we continue into the second half of the year, we’ll be closely monitoring how these trends evolve, particularly in light of global economic conditions and the increasing emphasis on energy transition technologies. We all know that now is a critical time for cobalt. Our focus will be on understanding these shifts to better navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities they present.
Secondly, we are excited to launch our "Cobalt 2050" study in autumn. Developed by BloombergNEF , this groundbreaking research is the first comprehensive study on any energy transition metal. It highlights cobalt's crucial role in achieving climate neutrality by 2050, outlining future demand aligned with global decarbonization goals. This landmark study underscores the industry's commitment to a sustainable and responsible energy transition. Stay tuned for more updates!
I’d also like to signpost another pioneering project that we have been working on over the summer with extensive input from our members. Our Cobalt Decarbonization Pathways project is due to be launched to coincide with COP29, and will offer a clear-eyed analysis of how much our industry can decarbonise its value chain. Notably, we will apply a “people lens” to our analysis ensuring that a Just Transition forms part of the proposed pathway. This work is rooted in robust data and really shows our commitment to leading the charge towards a just and sustainable future.
In addition to our own research, we’ve partnered with The Wilson Center , a highly respected bipartisan think tank in the US, to develop a report on policy options to strengthen the cobalt sector in the United States. This report, set to launch in September with Congressman Wittman, will be pivotal in shaping US policy around critical minerals and will be shared with key stakeholders in the US government and Congress.?
Finally, the Cobalt Institute team and I will be attending several events this autumn, including Minexpo International, LI-ON Battery Europe, NYC Climate Week, LME Week, Fastmarkets European Battery Raw Materials Conference and the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC). If you see us there, please say hello!?
Yours,?
Dinah
