Issue 4: Donations From Individuals, Membership Dues & Pivots
Progressive Multiplier
The PM finances revenue generation projects for progressive organizations, and in turn, shares fundraising knowledge.
Welcome to our fourth issue of F.I.R.E. Digest, where we spotlight our grantee partners experimenting with independent revenue generation across our three program areas.
Culture of learning. ?Experimentation. ?R&D. ?
Call it what you want, but it requires failing forward. ?At Progressive Multiplier, we embrace the nature of our work - helping build the progressive sector’s revenue generation knowledge and skills so that it can amplify a people-powered movement - as one big experiment.
Failure is an inherent part of innovation and growth - we can only build new ways to resource the movement if we try tactics that may fail. ?And we honor that failure is a privilege historically afforded to those centered by our society. ?
Two of the most important elements of our grantee partnerships are that we hold space for failure and help define project pivots based on purposefully collected data. ?Together, we turn setbacks into steps toward collective progress and power.
The need for experimentation, adaptability, and strategic learning in the journey to secure sustained funding is profound. In this issue, we share three stories of grantee partners whose initiatives failed forward.?
South Asians Leading Together (SAALT)
SAALT initially launched a monthly giving program to attract new donors and increase revenue. Unforeseen challenges forced them to adjust their approach, streamline their messaging, and expand their reach through donation aggregators, resulting in a gradual increase in revenue and a significant spike in donations.?

Jobs With Justice
Jobs With Justice launched a Facebook ad campaign targeting Amazon's labor practices to attract new supporters and generate revenue. However, the timing during the COVID lockdown hindered its effectiveness, resulting in a pivot to a print zine project. The zine engagement strategy was to re-engage offline donors and to offer creatives in the labor movement a place to share their ideas.?
Climate Justice Alliance
The Climate Justice Alliance set out to grow its individual member base and boost unrestricted revenue. Although limited staffing impacted financial returns, the project led to valuable changes, including adopting more inclusive communication and quadrupling their list size for long-term benefits.
